I was wondering, if you could give me your opinions on the effect of a GPA on an applicant. I have excellent SAT scores(2200+), but I have a 3.95 GPA. How much of an effect does a non-4.0 GPA have on your application @ Dartmouth?

Weighted or unweighted? Academic only or all-inclusive?

3.95 unweighted, academic only.

anyone who has moose in their name belongs at dartmouth

if the 3.95 is your unweighted (weighted meaning corrected for honors/ap)
then your fine as long as you took the toughest classes your school has to
offer

its real simple if you have 3.9 or higher unweighted
700 plus on every sat section and sat2
your classes were among the toughest given at your school
then you ve done everything right to be in the running
still have to hope but you did your job these past 3.5years in high
school

lower gpa and sats need more ..extracurrics..a legacy..
athlete,,some other hook...

hows about artists? do they like us?? :-P

i have a 3.87 unweighted academic only but i've taken tons of classes at georgetown university and georgewashington university (and got all As) and these arent counted on our GPA. my SATs are pretty ok, 700+ except for math which was a 680....but....here's my hook.

i've been doing professional theater in my local DC for a couple of years and I've gotten really good reviews in a whole bunch of big DC papers.

anyone think that hook will work??

dartmouth loves theater people ..
make sure you become totally aware of dartmouths theater and its accomplishments over the years

for example here is your homework assignment

what famous theatrical performing dance group was
created at dartmouth?

ooo Pilobolus? do i get a prize? :-D

very good
now continue to show passion for dartmouth and it will help
i presume u are a junior now ..i am still a big fan of ed
find out who your regional rep and always go and speak to them if they visit near your hometown

Awesome responds.. thanks! I am actually taking the single hardest courseload of anybody in my grade (and im sure my guidance counselor will make sure to mention that). I even got special permission to opt out of a lunch period this year, in order to take all the classes I wanted. Plus, my SATs wont officially come back until Feb 15, but my PSATS were 800 math, 710 CR, 650 Writing (my math will most likely stay the same, and the CR and Writing are probably going to increase by 50 points or so... but you never really know with writing). Speaking of which, how much does a lower writing score hurt? Is Dartmouth one of those schools that is still waiting to see with writing, or is it going to count?

It's not about GPA, it's about rank. If you go to a school with grade inflation and 50 vals, it's a different story than going to a school with grade deflation where one person has a 3.9.

Also, getting 700 on each SAT is hardly good for Dartmouth. Read the common data set morango!!

i know! i know! but i can always hope i suppose. le sigh i mean, 680 was really my only meh score. i got 740 on CR and 750 in Writing... i honestly hate math. but oh well. i did the best i could. no going back now, no regrets :-)
