ive ehard alot that chicago doesnt consider gpa as much as aother colleges and ive really been tahnkful for that because my gpa is not good (like a 90 uw). i had a very bad freshman year and although i have a huge upward trend i m not sure what chicago means by their statement that gpa isnt as important.

Where did you hear that?

Chicago is very open about the fact that the academic record--grades, courses, etc.--is the single most important part of an application, as it should be (as opposed to test scores, ECs, or something else).

That doesn't mean you can't get in. An A- average (a 3.7?) is good, especially is you have an upward trend, took the most challenging courses, and have recs, test scores, and essays to back you up.

ive actually heard in many places and read on the college board that gpa is not as importnat a factor as other things..can someone else back me up or am i totally off.

When I went to the Chicago Open House over the summer, the admissions counselor ranked the importance of several credentials:

Academic Rigor and Success in these courses (which includes both course load and GPA)

Essays

EC's

Test Scores

So i'm not sure I totally agree with what you're saying -- but then again, I'm just a high school senior.

Yea, when I visited, I heard what TheIndividual heard too. But, honestly, I wish beefs was right.

well idn if the individual is including gpa as an assumption but ive seriously heard that although rigor is one of the most improtant factors...gpa is not as importanat

in the interest of not starting a new thread:
what if you had an upward trend in rigor of classes along with grades? for example, i also had a pretty crappy freshman year and am now taking my first few AP courses in my junior year, english and spanish.

beefs: you've heard wrong.

no i dont think so.

to each his own.

also, all our decisions have been made -- so it's futile to fret.

Best of luck either way (we are all going to need it!)

The Individual

(btw, I was not assuming when I said that GPA was part of academic success and rigor, the counselor specifically stated so)

anyone know if/how chicago recalcs gpa

they don't (again, from the admission counselor) -- which is why they do not post a GPA statistic on their website:

true thanks...althoguh im trying to figure out how they compare each schools
