does penn look at the weighted or unweighted gpa? or both?
do adcoms at penn pay more attention to rank or gpa?

I wouldn’t say rank is all that important. In terms of GPA, what Penn is looking for is high grades in the most rigorous courses offered at your school. So - they’ll probably be looking at your unweighted and weighted GPA AND directly at the courses/grades listed on your transcript.

also, what year of high school do the adcoms take most into consideration?

what is the difference between weighted or unweighted gpa ?

CR7_ManUtd, weighted takes into account how many AP’s / honors classes you have taken. it gives more weight to the harder classes, thus increasing your GPA.
unweighted doesn’t give any more weight to the harder classes.

to the OP, i think they look at both because the rigor of your curriculum is important in your app. i think the collegeboard has a page where they indicate the importance of each part of your app.

weighted gpa helps in comparison of students from the same school
unweighted helps in comparison of students from similar (but not the same) schools
