In another thread, a parent mentioned that UKentucky requires NMFs to maintain a 3.5 GPA in order to keep their big NMF award. That is scary, especially if the student is an eng’g or comp sci major.
Many NMF high school students have rarely seen B’s on their report cards, much less C’s, so some naturally assume that maintaining a 3.5 GPA will be a piece of cake.
Wrong.
Classes like Gen Chem, Ochem, and all those Eng’g thermal, heat transfer, and fluid classes are known GPA-killers. And some of these classes are 4-5 credits each…so a B or a C can sink a GPA quickly.
Many people don’t even learn that there is a strict minimum GPA needed, and find out too late.
No one wants to have to leave their school just because their GPA drops below an unusually high req’t.
So…let’s make a list of schools with NMF scholarships and what GPA is needed to keep the award, year after year.
COPY/PASTE THE BELOW…AND ADD IN THE SCHOOLS THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT…
Another thing to think about is dual enrollment classes and if it’s a cumulative GPA that is considered for the scholarship. WSU, mentioned above, does consider it cumulatively and I have a 4.0 over 3 semesters (21 credit hours) of classes from the cc that will be factored into my GPA.
UKy does not require a 3.5, it’s a 3.3. Our D2 is a current freshman, and 3.3 is the requirement we were quoted over the phone with the scholarship office and was confirmed by her scholarship letter.
From UKy’s website (NMFs are awarded the Patterson scholarship)
This is not just for NMF kids either… It’s for all the scholarships out there!!
I find this to be very unfair. As a matter of fact, it’s insulting. These kids earned the scholarships in high school - maintaining them shouldn’t be an added stress. In our case, DS is looking for engineering where the brighter students only make ‘B’ averages. The scholarship athletes don’t have to worry with this at all. So disappointing. There are going to be a few C’s in college, but at some if those schools, you pretty much can’t have any. Statics alone can shatter a dream.
I think another question that is important is, what happens to your scholarship when you are put on scholarship probation?
UKy has this for their probation period.
“Students receiving four-year renewable academic-based scholarships are granted one semester of scholarship probation. Scholarship funds will not be provided during the probationary semester. A scholarship recipient whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.300, but not lower than 2.000, at the May grade review, will be placed on scholarship probation for the following term. A scholarship will be reinstated for a student on probation only if the student completes twelve (12) semester hours and earns a cumulative grade point average of 3.300 or higher by the end of the probationary period.”
OU probation policy.
Students who fall below the 2.80 cumulative retention GPA are placed on probation without funding. They have one full academic year from the time they are placed on probation to raise their combined retention GPA to a 2.80. Students who are still below a 2.80 GPA by the end of the probation year lose their scholarship. Students who have questions regarding their eligibility status may contact the OU Scholars Program for specific details.
I am trying to find UAlabama’s probation policy in writing but am struggling to do so.
