Grad School Admissions

Hi, I am an incoming freshman to the University of Kansas, (Will probably to transfer to either Duke or Umich). I didn't do a good job during high school planning for college and it has bitten me in the a*. So I want to do what I need to do to get into graduate schools that I *plan on attending. As of now Duke (Fuqua) is where I hope to go to obtain my MBA. But I am also considering NYU, Columbia and Michigan. I will probably graduate with a double major in Marketing and Sports Management or minor in one of them, we'll have to see. I want to hopefully work in the NBA or NCAA and start in marketing or something and move on up. So I was wondering what kind of stats I need to get into these schools. Like GPA and GMAT scores and work experience and all that stuff. Also if you have any other advice pertaining to this that would be great! Thanks!

Try the Business School forum for MBA questions. It’s pretty much only academic-track grad students in here.

You’re an incoming freshman. When I was an incoming freshman into college I planned to major in political science and go to law school. I majored in psychology and ended up getting a PhD in social psych.

At this point, concentrate on exploring your interests and doing what you like. You may switch your major to philosophy or engineering or theater. You may stay in marketing, but decide not to go to graduate school. Concentrate on getting the best grades you can get in your classes, and revisit this at the very beginning of your junior year.

Generally speaking, though, the top business schools like to see at least 3-5 years of progressively responsible business experience - which means you get promoted rapidly and show evidence of leadership and management skill. It’s also good to produce something tangible, like high sales commissions or a surplus in a budget you oversee or something.
