Grad School and Work Schedule

I am a parent of 3 boys and a federal worker. I am a supervisor in Logistics Department. I was accepted to Villanova University for their online MPA program. I’ve been really excited and my first class begins July 1st. The curriculum requires once a week a two-hour session (online) on Wednesday or Monday depending on the class. However, I am having growing concerns that my manager is not going to accommodate my schedule after a while. Sadly, some do not value education.

Should I apply for another program even though I’ve been accepted to such a great school? Rutgers is another online MPA program that I would be interested in. There is no requirement to have an online class discussion. I would be free from any potential restraints or possible schedule conflicts. Or should I just roll the dice that my manager will work with me like he said, even though at any time he could stop. My fear is that this happens halfway through grad school.

CC, what say you? Any advice is greatly appreciated ?

I wish I had advice for you. I too am applying for grad school and worry that work will get in the way.

I talked to my boss and my peers and they all told me to go for it and that they’d work around my school. Helps that they’re paying for it, so there’s even more of an incentive for them to want me to succeed.

Do you have peers that could cover if something came up that night?

@NavyVet427 - Welcome to the Forum! If your manager has said that he/she would accommodate you then I think you should take that at face value unless you have experience that demonstrates that the management would not keep their word. Is the employer paying for some of the tuition?

The federal government is shifty. At least where I work. Today I took it upon myself to not allow someone to dictate my future. I applied to Rutgers online MPA program. I need a completely asynchronous format that’s online. It’s the best way a working father can have the peace of mind that a graduate education is obtainable. Thank you all for your responses, it means a lot.
