just wondering what I should expect from grad school in philosophy, thinking about doing something I really love... but I'd rather not deal with politics. Moving to California, so I will have all the schools in that state to choose from. I am looking at SF State for a masters then go from there into a doctoral program. I had 3 undergrad courses in philo...my favorite subject.

Thoughts?

You should expect writing. Lots and lots of writing.

Good, always liked writing over tests… I assume a lot of very difficult reading as well.

did you complete a PhD?

I did not. But I know many who did.

I can tell you that in Philosophy, when it comes to prestige, the professors matter, not the school. So when you are looking at schools (if you haven’t made your choice already) look at the professors who would serve as advisors.

Yes I have noticed that, only been mildly researching for awhile. For instance at FSU, the philosophy dept is OK but some of the professors are top 5 in their field. I have a few years though. I’d like to stay in California though

Well you definitely have a lot of choices, especially in California. A lot of good people over there… Best of luck to you!

thanks and yeah i have looked into several in the bay area.
