Grad School Musicology/ Performance

Hello All,

I am new here and would like to know if anyone out there knows if there are any grad schools offering programs with these specs. I can definitely apply to others, just wondering if there was something that someone knew that might help me "on my way." I am an undergraduate junior flute performance major at the University of Denver. I would like to study a double Master's degree in Flute Performance and Musicology or do a Masters leading into PhD track in Musicology at a school that has a great flute teacher. I have studied with flutist's of the L.A. Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Colorado Symphony, and would like my grad school to have a teacher that's even another "notch" up from that. Even though I still have time, I am thinking about places like Boston University b/c I noticed they have a double Masters option, they seem to be a solid overall college and have GREAT flute teachers such as Linda Toote (who I'm studying w/ next week at a summer program). Also, University of British Columbia (seems like a great location and wonderful flute teacher- Lorna McGhee who played in the London Phil) and my current school as a safety money-wise (they have great endowments and I would ensure I would get good orchestral performance experience) and perhaps University of Colorado, who has a great teacher Christina Jennings.

Are these good musicology programs? For preparation, I'm planning to bump up my grades even though I currently have a 3.7, learn French, and start some good research/ writing/ projects, as well as practice for summer music festivals to enhance my performance resume. I'm also thinking about doing volunteer stuff in the summer to be a well balanced applicant. Is there anything someone might know of that I'm missing to ensure that my application is solid to this program- since I'm a ways out and can correct it now to make it better prepared?

Sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance for ALL your help. Sincerely

Since I’m currently attending BU’s graduate program, I thought I’d pipe in with some information about the school. You will likely not have a problem getting into the program as long as you meet their performance expectations in your audition.

The musicology department is very strong. Linda Toote is an excellent flute teacher. The chair of the winds and brass department is not very organized.

The organization of the admissions office is not good. If you are going to apply to BU for a graduate program, be sure you know exactly what the requirements are and stay on top of all of your deadlines even after admissions. They are not hand-holders. Also, as a musicology major you may have some graduate assistantship positions available that you would not as a performance major. Both programs are very intense. You sound like you are very organized so it likely wont’ be a problem, but you should know what to expect.

Undergraduate admissions go through a different office so the above statement doesn’t apply.

Thanks so much! That really helps a lot! :)
