Grad School, Then IB or Management and Consulting??

I heard that a lot of firms look at your overall GPA. Unfortunately, due to some chem and bio classes i took during my freshman year, my gpa suffered a lot. my econ (major) gpa might be very good however. and i have noticed that a lot of grad schools look at the grades from the classes you're applying to. so, if i can get into a good econ-related or finance grad school, would it be easier to work at a top firm like McKinsey or JP Morgan? would getting an MA then applying for jobs be easier? if so, what would the firms look at? also the grad school gpa?

If you earn a graduate degree, firms will definitely look at your grad school GPA. They will probably also look at your undergrad GPA, but I'm not sure.

But if your grad school GPA is very good, they probably won't care about your undergrad GPA (again, not totally sure).

I was in this same position of having lower grades in bio-chem and then switching to econ. Firms aren't so focused on grades that doing well in econ should be enough as usually one would list overall and major GPA on their resume. I don't think getting an MA would be worth it or easier to get a job at these firms. This isn't college or law school or college admissions. Firms are focusing on more than just your grades.

But if my undergrad gpa isnt high enough to get recruited by McKinsey, would getting good grades in grad school (masters) complement it? Firms do look at gpa...

I am very interested in this topic as well.

Unless you have top grades at top schools, McKinsey and it’s peers, and ibanks, will want you to bring a skill set they can’t easily find in people fitting that description.

I am an econ/math major and learning a language on the side.So I should just give up trying to get into consulting because i am not in the top tier schools? The school i currently go to does have some connections with Mckinsley and BCG through alumni and co-ops.

Also, keep in mind that to get into a top Bschool ( that these firms recruit at) you are going to need good grades. Unless you have exceptional work experience/great GMAT. some other great hook…the opportunities that you are looking for will be tough without attending a good BSchool
