Okay this was based on the 2013 essay which was

Analyze changes and continunities that political transfromations had on Mediterranean culture between 200CE - 1000CE

Here is the essay itself. I am struggling with essays. My multiple choice is on point because I got 61/70 on my practice exam (unreleased, given by school) and I barely studied. Essays trip me up too much. I figured if I get 60/70 on multiple choice, I can get a 6 on DBQ (easy) 4 on CCOT and 4 on compare and manage to get a five. So without further ado, here is the essay.

Political transformations often transformed the culture of Mediterranean regions in the period 200 CE – 1000 CE. During this period, Constantine’s religious policy, introduction of the powerful Church, and the rise of the Islam in northern Africa changed religious practices and art and architecture, but women’s right stayed constant.

Religious practices drastically changed during this period. During Constantine’s reign, the introduction of state-sponsored Christianity drastically converted many people from Roman polytheism to monotheistic Christianity. Around the middle of this period, or circa 700 CE, the rise Islam in Northern Africa prompted more changes in religious practices. Now the northern Africa Bantu speaking people converted to Islam. Mass amounts of people in these regions converted to Islam. During the end of this period, little change happened as Islamic influence in Northern Africa still stayed strong and European Christianity held its own. Religious practices in the Mediterranean region changed and so did architecture.

Architecture changed in Mediterranean from 200-1000 CE. During Constantine’s reign, Roman architecture still prevailed as the introduction of Christianity brought little artistic or architectural changes. During the middle of this period, the rise of Islam and the Catholic Church brought many changes in art and architecture. Political influence of Italy and Greece allowed Gothic art to spread. Gothic art was popularized during this period and can be seen in many Medieval buildings. Islamic art included mosaics and abstract art as drawing people is against religion. Architecture also changed because the minarets in mosques were prevalent in northern Africa. During the end of this period, little art or architecture changed sincethere was no political changes in the Mediterranean region. Art and architecture changed, but women’s right stayed constant.

Women’s right stayed constant throughout this period of political upheavals. During Constantine’s reign, the introduction of state-sponsored Christianity subjugated women. They were expected to care for the children at home and not be able to have a public life. During the rise of the Islamic Empire, women were also subjugated in all regions they encompassed, including Northern Africa. They were expected to wear veils and live in harems. The Catholic Church’s remarkable political influences in the region allowed them uphold their limitation on women’s rights. During the end of this period, little changes occurred as there were little changes in political systems of the world. The Tang Dynasty still held power, Europe and Japan remained in a feudal society, and the Islamic Empire was flourishing.
