Okay i've recently discovered a HUGE HUGE problem at my school - I had heard about grade deflation but didn't think it would affect me since I'm a really good student - Anyway, I'm a frosh and I want to transfer and grade deflation is seriously hurting my gpa - Do other schools know about schools with grade deflation? I'm seriously getting 90s on tests that are being counted as B's in my gpa - I'm afraid I'm going to end this semester with a 3.5, but I'm pulling for the 3.6/3.7 - I want to transfer to ivy's btw - anyone have advice or an opinion?

What school do you go to? That deflation is nothing compared to berkeley's engineering.

BU - but still..i'm only a little freshman and they're only going to see this semester's gpa - one of my professors told me he couldn't give me an A- because no one else got one so he had to just give me a B+ since thats the best he could do - what are you going to do about your school's grade deflation??

i have the exact same problem, i'm from BU but i want to transfer to an ivy...except i have no clue what my gpa will be, probably between 3.0 and 3.5.

what school are you in? - are you a frosh?

yep, CAS frosh. altho technically sophomore b/c of ap credits, but i'd be applying for sophomore status in fall 2006.

Unless you have a spectacular hook, you do not have a chance at any Ivy with less than a 3.5.

what's a good hook? i'm an international student, interesting in majoring both in psychology and theater studies. yale is one of the few institutions that has an intense theater studies program that is actually academic and not part of a conservartory, which i don't want.

the reason i'm transferring in the first place is that i want to be in an institution that actually values learning. grade deflation here has not only (duh) lowered my grade, but has stopped motivating me to learn and study, because i feel like all they're doing is comparing me to the people beside me instead of treating me like an individual and grading me for what i know. i figure yale is such an institution, but if it isn't then please, tell me where it is.

i mean, don't get me wrong, i love BU, but i am paying tuition to learn, not to hang out and recieve random grades.

again, the question is do they consider grade deflation, or will my grades be analyzed regularly?

I think Yale is, but there is no way you are going to be admitted with anything less than a 3.5.

is that a rule?

i thought we said something about a hook...

im not sure if its a rule - but i know some schools say in the app that a 3.5 is a requirement

i just checked the app and it doesn't give any kind of requirement, i may need to look more carefully though.

from BU man, lower than a 3.5, ur finished man. What is your SAT. Below a 1400 will hurt you as well. I mean, no offense, but there are ppl out there applying from other top 15 schools and ivies such as myself who have a 3.6+ gpa and a 1400+ SAT. Why should they take you over someone else?
