Grade Deflation/Pre-Med Program

I’m very interested in applying to Fordham University Rose Hill early deciscion as a Biology major and I plan to be on the pre-med track. I currently have a 94 average and my class rank is 23/227. I still have to take the ACT but my practice scores were a 29 and 30.

I’ve become hesitant about Fordham since I have heard there is a lot of grade deflation. I was told that pre-med intro level courses (Chem & Bio) had a lot of grade deflation, especially with a C+ curve, and I wanted to know how accurate this was.

When visiting Fordham I was also told that no one has a 4.0 GPA. Is this true?

It’d be great if anyone had an idea (or even an estimate) as to what the average pre-med gpa is, specifically after freshmen year.

Does anyone know the size of the pre-med program at the start of freshmen year VS. at the end of freshmen year or by junior/senior year?

Lastly, does anyone have any recommendations of majors at Fordham that are most suitable for the pre-med track besides Biology? I know I can choose whatever I want, but I wanted to see if anyone had any specific recommendations!

Thank you!!

I wouldn’t say that Fordham grade deflates, they just don’t inflate like many other schools do. It’s very hard to get over a 3.85 at Fordham, but I know people that have done it. I have over a 3.8, and a lot of people make Dean’s List (over a 3.6) every year. I even got a 4.0 GPA this past semester! Getting a 4.0 GPA should be hard though, or it just proves that the classes themselves aren’t hard and students aren’t learning.

At RH, they do curve the big science classes, and I do know someone who got an A in the class but got curved down to an A-, which was a bummer for her.

There’s a decent amount of Pre-Meds who switch, but mostly it’s because they decide medicine isn’t for them, not because they flunk out. I was Pre-Med for like a week freshman year and now I’m a History/Theology double major.

The nice thing about the core curriculum is that it opens your eyes to a lot of stuff. If you major in something that’s not a B.S., though, you’ll also have to finish the language requirement, which can be up to four more classes, so keep that in mind.
