Is there grade inflation at Stanford and how does it compare to other high caliber institutions?

Also, how's the workload/cut-throat-level of the econ dept?

Thanks.

Considering that this "thread" has 50 views and zero replies, it would be great if someone who could answer this question would respond.

For your question on grade inflation, I would suggest doing a search in this board, since I've seen a lot of these threads in the past.

What I remember is that there is some grade inflation, but it's not as bad as Harvard, but certainly more than MIT. I've also heard a lot of people say it's generally pretty easy (easy for Stanford students) to get a B in a class, but you have to work really hard to get an A or you have to be pretty lazy to get a C, and rarely anybody gets Ds.

such is not the case.

they want you to come in thinking that there is grade inflation at stanford but then IHUM kills you with its infamous grade deflation (where approx 80% get Bs). In many classes you work for your B and really hard for the A (unless it's an easy class and trust they do exist - as stereotypical as this sounds there's a list that they give to the athletes and on them are the easy classes and once word gets out they're rather popular). And many students do get Cs even if they work hard in a class. And there are almost always a student or two that fails the class.

Econ will be tough because it's a HUGE dept in that everyone and their mother majors in it. very cutthroat. take some classes in the dept before deciding whether youwant to pursue it. The worst thing about the econ dept is that you'll have all these amazingly accomplished profs who can't teach well anymore because they're old or apathetic and are rich enough/famous enough to not care about how they're teaching.
don't take this econ sermon as the bible, because this is what i've heard from recent grads. I did take an econ class though and hated it because it was poorly taught and my TA sucked.

Anyone else have any thoughts/comments?

If you're in sciences/engineering expect a tough curve and a class full of billiant people.

What about soc sci departments, like econ and poli sci?

Well, econ is apparently really tough. I'm sure poli sci is competitive as well because that's what all the pre-law students major in. I'm guessing that the other fuzzy classes must be really easy in order to balance out the difficulty of the science/engineering courses.

There's a really good website that deals with the subject of grade inflation. I'll give the link. www.gradeinflation.net

Here's a link you'd love, GS: www.crappyschool.com

You'll have to excuse me if I don't actually check the link, because I assume that it will come up as stanford again.

When pigs fly, GS... :)

I'm looking out my window as I write this and oh...wait!...there they go, flying down to Palo Alto I suppose:)
