To what extent did the War of 1812 constitute a “second American revolution”? In your answer be sure to address EACH of the following.

Foreign relations
Economic development

Limit your answer to the period through the 1820s.

The Americans were still very young as a whole and had just fought another war with their previous caretaker. They had emerged victorious (again), and had came out stronger than ever before. This strength after the War of 1812 to a large extent constituted another American revolution as America has finally started growing up, in power (and age), and has finally made some significant progress in foreign relations and economic development. This progress was seen with the Monroe Doctrine and Henry Clay’s American System.

Since the beginning of colonial times, Europe had played a huge role in intervening in the North American continent. That was about to end. After the Americans rose victorious in the War of 1812, the Europeans had finally realized that America is now a key player in world relations and the Americans had realized it as well. The American government expressed this realization though the Monroe Doctrine. This doctrine was expressed for the reasons to prevent further European entanglements and to express America’s strength. It asserted the concept that Europe may no longer intervene in North America and that America had full control now. This constituted a second revolution because America had finally made a move that showed the world it’s true power and in effect, the European nations abided to this policy. This second American revolution really started America’s path to world super-power status as it was America’s first step on the global state to express its global stance.

To the outside, America had took control and showed the world their stance but on the inside, the American government pursued a policy to vitalize the American economy, through Clay’s American System. Most notable items in this system include first, a tariff to protect American industry and second, internal improvements to jump start the American economy. This tariff was important because it taxed foreign goods which pushed American citizens to buy American goods thus boosting the American industries and the American economy. The internal improvements were important because these improvements greatly increased on the already-lacking infrastructure in infant America. It was also important because it led to an increase in spending, therefore stimulating the economy. This American system was important because it allowed the Americans to have a plan on future prosper. Although Hamilton’s early economy plans in the late 18th century are credited for starting the American economy, this economic development after the War of 1812 is credited for allowing that economy to prosper.

The War of 1812 simply isn’t another American revolution just because we fought Britain again. It is considered another revolution to a large extent because it set the basis for the future prospering of America in both international and domestic affairs.

Anyone? :)

Clear thesis statement and introduction.
You missed out on the Treaty of Ghent which is pretty important when you’re talking about the War of 1812. You talk about the American System but you don’t explicitly link that to the the War of 1812. May have also been helpful to talk about the role of international trade here. (embargoes and impact on economy) Lacking in specificity
