Is the opinion of the majority-in government or in any other circumstances-a poor guide?

The opinion of the majority, in most situations, is a poor guide. Several examples from scientific to political, show us that the majority can make mistakes.

Copernicus was castigated when he claimed that the Earth went around the Sun, and not the other way around. The majority thought differently, and so temporarily won. In such a case, the majority of the people won't possess the scientific knowledge that Copernicus would, and so are bound to have different, if not contrary, opinions.

Nelson Mandela had stood firmly against the majority, and eventually came out victorious. As an anti-apartheid, he was continuously opposed by a large majority of white South Africans. Even after spending 27 years in prison, Mandela did not give up. He eventually won. Now his actions are considered heroic and 'right'.

On the other hand, the majority has the authority when electing the government. Different political party's have different motives, and the majority will only choose the one with similar motives to theirs.

History shows us that the majority's opinion is flawed, though, that may not always be the case.

Well, this is what I think. You have provided two very good examples why do you think the majority is not always correct. But I would like to question the third. You have explained why the majority of the people choose the government they like, but you haven’t explained why would this not be a poor guide. Did you get what I mean? perhaps could could have further said, for an immediate development of the country, the democratic election can be beneficial, since we can assume the majority wants “good” for the country. you can provide a stronger plausible reason than mine.
I guess you will be a given an average of 3 to 4…you do seem to have a potential of scoring a 5 though!!!
For higher scores you need to write longer essays. For example, you can add: Copernicus was “right” in saying that the earth revolved around the sun while other were wrong. The majority had a perspective which was decisive and hence were poorly guided into believing that the Sun revolved around the Sun.
And probably its best to avoid extreme words like “bound to believe”
The Nelson Mandela example is really good.

Maybe it is a little short to get 5. But the examples are good.

Thanks a lot for responding!

@sadman51: Thanks for the advice!

BTW, I think you can use some new examples. Example about Mandela was used by too many people. Although it is good to demonstrate your point, preparing some new examples will be good for you.
