Prompt: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of the people in positions of authority?

Every community, organization, or nation needs a strong centralized leader in order to function properly. However, if the leader becomes corrupt with power and begins to oppress the people, it is the duty of those people to overthrow the leader. It is crucial to question the ideas and decisions of the people in authority. Several examples from history clearly demonstrate the principle of the consent of the governed.

As demonstrated by Martin Luther when he posted his 95 complaints on a church door, the people in authority must be criticized when they do wrong. During this period of time, the people were of Europe were subject to the oppressive rule of the Roman Catholic Church. IT betrayed the Christian people under its jurisdiction by levying taxes, using violence, and immorally selling indulgences. Martin Luther posted 95 criticisms on a church door in Germany, which encouraged the people to rebel against Papal authority. He questioned the Church's authority, and this led to a dramatic shift in power by initiating the Protestant Reformation.

The French people also questioned the decisions and ideas of Maximilian Robespierre during the Reign o fTerror. Robespierre led the French into a period of constant fear and bloodshed during the French Revolution. Robespierre sought to eliminate anyone who opposed the radical revolution. This led to the prosecution and public execution of a large number of people. Soon, the people began to question his venal actions. They formed as one and ousted Robespierre from power. The people were forced to take matters into their own hands. They public executed Robespierre and led France into a period of stability under the rule of the Directory.

Also, in the recent power struggle in Libya, the people have abdicated the oppressive dictator Muammar Gaddafi. This is another example of people questioning their leaders. Gadaffi had been neglecting the people of his country. The people were discontent and wanted to see a change in power. They took matters into their own hands and overthrew him. They are currently moving towards a new government and a period of stability and peace.

After carefully analyzing the actions of Martin Luther, the French people, and the Libyan freedom fighters, it can be concluded that the people should, indeed, question the ideas and decisions of authority. Had these people failed to question authority, they would have continued to live in harsh conditions under an oppressive ruler. Everyone should adhere to John Locke's principle of the consent of the governed. It is the duty of the people to keep authority in check.
