Prompt: Does planning interfere with creativity?

Planning is essential for creativity. Several examples from our country’s Gov’t, literary works, to famed musicians clearly demonstrate that planning sets up the necessary foundation work upon which to be creative.

As shown by the Constitutional conventions, planning out the future gave the delegates a chance to sort out the good ideas from bad, creating one of the most original documents in the world. In May of 1787, 55 delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies met in the Philadelphia State House to redraft the Articles of Confederation. However, after much planning and discussing, the leaders realized that the Articles of Confederation needed to be replaced due to its basic faults, and a lack of a strong foundation. Thus, the planning of a new documents commenced. Over the period of 4 long, hot, grueling months, and hours upon days of planning, a draft of the Constitution was created, consisting of novel ideas such as 3 branches of Government, State/Federal relationships, and checks and balances. Without the months of planning that had gone into writing the Constitution, America would be far worse off and the creative ideas found behind the document may have never been found or used. Thus, the Constitutional Convention proved invaluable for a creative and original America.

Similarly, the Novel, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, by Mary Shelley demonstrates clearly the creative advantage of planning. In writing Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, Mary Shelley spent many years solely dedicated to the drafting and piecing together of the novel. What was once a simple campfire story metamorphosed into a thought-provoking, philosophical, and creative story. In writing, Shelley spent time in most of the places mentioned in the book including France and Geneva, Switzerland. The book went on to be embraced by the world through countless movies/theatrical renditions, and has held a place in today’s society as well---a true classic.Hence, the creative genius of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is demonstrated by its planning.

Through the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most renown musicians and songwriters of the world, it can be seen that planning plays a crucial role in stimulating creativity. Bach’s unparalleled genius is unheard of in the music world. At the Age of 14, Bach began to study music at St. Michael's school in Luneburg. After two years, he learned to sing acapella, play the organ, and the harpsichord. One of his most famous works, the Prelude and Fugues, from the Well-Tempered Clavier was a very creative, and Bach spent a lifetime trying to perfect it, so as to please the hearer. The time and energy preparing and planning spent a lifetime for Bach. Undoubtedly, the time did not go to waste, but instead made the works better. Therefore, planning for perfection in music was essential for creativity.

After careful analysis of the creation of our Constitution, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, and the music of J.S. Bach, one can see that planning is, indeed, beneficial and even crucial for creative thought. Without it, ideas would be fleeting, and like a jigsaw puzzle, it would be very difficult to try and piece everything together to form something unique and interesting. Planning is the only way to guarantee the solidarity of thoughts and ultimately, creativity.
