Newness is constantly embraced. People strive to get the latest, newest, and trendiest models around. There is nothing wrong with replacing old things with new ones, but people shouldn’t always prefer new things, ideas, and values to those of the past. Examples from modern technology demonstrate why newness shouldn’t always be embraced.
Facebook, a popular social networking site, is an example of newness. Facebook often replaces real face to face meetings of friends and instead of increasing social activity, it actually decreases it. People should prefer the old way of socialization. Instead of talking to a group of friends talking in a chat room, why not talk to those friends at a home or a restaurant? People shouldn’t prefer Facebook over actually meeting with friends. Facebook has made our society less social and twisted people’s minds into thinking Facebook is what socializing is.
As our information of technology grows and grows, the laziness of people grows and grows as well. When technology was very limited, people would go out and play soccer, basketball, tennis, dance, and participate in all sorts of activities. Although many people still do these things today, a large number of people are also substituting real physical activity for entertainment in video games or exercise on system games. This new thing should not be embraced and preferred over sports outdoors and entertainment that doesn’t involve a massive amount of technology. Technology has become so advanced it has started seeping our human values and traditions.
Although newness should be embraced every now and then, it should not be embraced at every opportunity. Preferring a new thing or idea hastily often leads to nasty consequences. Technology such as Facebook to technology like video games demonstrates why people shouldn’t always prefer new things, ideas or values to those of the past.
