Grade my essay

I believe this essay topic is taken from the January 2009 SAT. I'll concede, it's not the best essay I have ever written but please let me know how I did on a scale of 1-12. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm copying my essay verbatim so there will probably be a few grammatical errors

Planning lets people impose order on the chaotic processes of making or doing something new. Too much planning, however, can lead people to follow the same predetermined course of action, to do things the same way they were done before. Creative thinking is about breaking free from the way that things have always been. That is why it is vital for people to know the difference between good planning and too much planning.

Assignment: Does planning interfere with creativity?

Many people view creative thinking is about breaking free from the way that things have always been. However, planning is a vital component of creativity. Examples of where planning has led to creative results can be seen in many engineering feats.

For almost 60 years, a plethora of scientists around the world have been searching for the elusive particle known as the Higgs Boson. It wasn't until July 4, that the search finally ended. A large part of this scientific discovery can be attributed to the collaborative effort and careful planning of many scientists at the Large Hadron Collider. It wasn't until the world's brightest scientists and engineers gathered together under a unified project, that the Higgs Boson, with its vast amount of uses in science, was finally discovered.

Another example of how planning has fostered creativity can be seen in Google. Google is the largest computer company in the world, bringing people smartphones, Youtube, and a superior search engine. All of this is only possible through a planned effort undertaken by a large group of engineers at Google. But, unlike other companies, the intereior of Google offices looks like a toy store. Employees are even allowed to sleep in their offices, with a provided cot. This creative approach to running a multi-billion dollar business is what's responsible for the latest smartphone or a better and more stream lined search engine.

Planning does not interfere with creativity. Moreover, it fosters creativity. Examples can be seen in how the planned undertaking at Geneva yielded the Higgs Boson, with its plethora of uses and applications in the world, and also in how Google runs its company in an effort to always keep innovation fresh.

Hi! I am also studying for the SAT essay section and I thought your essay was really fun to read! You used lots of transition words and action verbs–which is something that essay graders will be looking for. I’d give this essay a 10. You gave apt examples of how planning led to creative discoveries, but I wish you had written more about the actual planning, in addition to stating that there WAS planning.

For instance, the Higgs Boston was made possible by “careful” planning, but what exactly does “careful” mean? It is an abstract word. You could have included more details, like…conferences, experiments, and research…etc.

And for google: the accomplishments were made through a “planned effort.” What is this planned effort? Because you wrote “but” right after, the details you included about google’s unique work environment does not logically explain what you meant by google’s planned effort.

I hope this helped!!!
