Planning lets people impose order on the chaotic processes of making or doing something new. Too much planning, however, can lead people to follow the same predetermined course of action, to do things the same way they were done before. Creative thinking is about breaking free from the way that things have always been. That is why it is vital for people to know the difference between good planning and too much planning.

Assignment:
Does planning interfere with creativity?

Planning ahead of time is much more successful than playing by ear. The best plans take into account many variables of change and allow for deviation under different conditions. Whether just mapping out a family vacation or a national tour for a famous band, planning saves a lot of trouble without impeding creativity.

Last summer, my family and I travelled to Orlando, Florida, to visit the Universal Studios theme park. We arrived in the late afternoon after an eight hour drive, so we were too exhausted to check out the park that night. However, at night, before we went to sleep, we planned out our route through the park, making sure to hit everybodys favorite rides at the times when they would be least busy in order to avoid long lines. We also gave ourselves extra time to travel between each attraction and rests in between. The next day, we went through every ride efficiently, without any long delays from waiting in line. By planning everything out, we even had extra time to ride our favorite roller coasters multiple times and enjoy an acrobatic performance that we had not noticed the previous night.

One of my favorite bands of all time, called The Fray, was on a tour across the US two years ago. One of their stops was Greensboro, North Carolina, which is about an hour away from Charlotte. According to their manager, they had overestimated the travel time and had arrived two days earlier than expected, so instead of just relaxing in their hotel, The Fray came to Charlotte in the interim to give a surprise concert in Freedom Park, pro bono. By planning ahead of time and giving themselves extra time cushions, The Fray was able to build an even bigger fan base in Charlotte and improve their overall reputation.

Prudent planning not only helps to avoid disasters, but also can bring about unexpected benefits. Creativity thrives under the best planning, instead getting hindered by planning.
