I am applying to Princeton as an international student. I have never written any paper in English during my high school years. Is there anyone accepted to Princeton without submitting Graded Written Paper?
I received an email from Princeton about Graded Written Paper. They said that they will consider my application even if I didn’t submit GWP. Will the fact that I am not submitting GWP adversely affect my application? I am really looking forward to hearing from you guys!
Princeton answered your question. Why do you want someone here to tell you differently? If you don’t have a graded paper in English, then you don’t have a graded paper in English. If you get rejected, it will likely be more because you are intl than because you did not submit a graded paper.
On the other hand, you could submit a graded paper written in your native language and ask them to consider having it read by a professor who is familiar with your language. It’s impossible to know, but it might lead to a good outcome.
One also needs to be cognizant of why Princeton (or Brown, etc.) asks for this optional submission:
Since the language of instruction at Princeton is English, a paper in e.g. Farsi does not fulfill that need. Additionally, it’s not the Farsi instructor’s job to evaluate HS essays.
Please remember you have to write all your papers in college in English if you are admitted. I have found that these days schools at this level tend to favor “international” students who actually study in US high schools. If you are from China, most of those admits who actually come from Chinese HS are from a handful of schools AOs are familiar with. I don’t have time to find the article but you should be able to find it easily.
“If, as an international student, you are unable to submit a graded written paper, it will not be a disadvantage in any way in our process. We understand that you may not have one, so you will not be penalized.”
This is the answer I got from the admissions office myself. I would not worry about it too much.
You are fine because Princeton admissions said so. But, consider sending the graded paper in its original form with an English translation done by you if you feel insecure about the completeness of your application.
