I’m interested in transferring to a college with a stronger program in my field of study, but I’m worried about my grades. In high school, I was ranked first in my class (with a very high weighted GPA to boot), but at my current college (which is fairly rigorous, but still not as strong in the program I’m interested in), I might end up with a final GPA of 3.7 or 3.8, largely because I’m taking a few really hard classes this semester. (One is in a field unrelated to my major; the other is.) I’ve heard that colleges give less weight to college grades than high school grades when the person transferring is a rising sophomore, but will this still hurt me? I’m applying to several Ivies, Duke, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt, and I realize that getting into a lot of those schools is a matter of luck, but will the circumstances I just described hurt me?
Bump.
Colleges are most interested in your college grades because this is the best reflection of how you will do at their school.
I’ve heard the opposite is true for rising sophomores, in that high school grades still get a fair amount of consideration as well.
One last bump.
Yes, the High School grades still count but your performance in a college setting is more important.
