My daughter has been accepted and will be visiting this weekend for Destination Tulane. She is interested in neuroscience and pre-med and is wondering about the rigor. Do they grade on a curve or try and weed students out of the pre-med program? Some other schools that she’s applied are known for grade deflation so she wonder how this would compare. Any input is greatly appreciated.
As far as I can tell, Tulane grades pretty much on the curve in the basic science and math classes needed for pre-med. I am very familiar with the weed-out courses to which you refer at schools like WUSTL. I don’t think Tulane gives away A’s in general, although like any school you have your easier profs and your harder ones. But from what I observed and from the feedback I have gotten over the years, if you know your stuff and turn in the work assigned, you will get the better grades. For some classes attendance, or more accurately lack thereof, will be noticed and can have a negative impact on grades.
Thanks for clarifying this! She’s very conscientious and studies hard but doesn’t want cut throat like the stress of the weed-out schools.
My daughter is a freshman this year and has been taking courses on a neuroscience track, although not necessarily pre-med. The coursework is challenging, but she has not felt like they are trying to weed out. Do the assignments, attend class and study and you will get better grades as @fallenchemist said.
father to freshman S who is biomed eng/pre-med at Tulane this year; agree with what has been said…definitely much work required, but if you do the work, you will be duly rewarded. Also agree, that attendance in some classes very much matters.
