How does grade conversion work at Cornell? In other words, what is a "3.5" on the 100 scale or what is an "A-" on the 4.0/100 scale, etc.

Thanks

This is quoted from the 2004-2005 Courses of Study Book:

The official university grading system is composed of letter grades with pluses and minuses. Passing grades range from A+ to D-. F is failing. INC denotes a grade of incomplete, and R is the grade given at the end of the first semester of a year-long course. The grades of INC and R do not have quality-point equivalents:

A+= 4.3; A =4.0; A- =3.7; B+ =3.3; B =3.0; B- =2.7; C+ 2.3;
C =2.0; C- =1.7; D+ = 1.3; D = 1.0; D- =0.7; F = 0.0

What's the minimum gpa you need to get into a good engineering grad school?

probably low since you only need a 3.4 to get on the dean's list...i think the average is a 2.8? correct me if I am wrong.

Sounds about right to me

Say if you are applying to graduate schools, are the 4.3s converted back to the 4.0 scale?

k, i GET all that and my biggest problem is now...what is A-? and what is 3.7?? in the 0-100% scale??? this isnt what i ever know for US, in canada all we have is 0-100%...and very few if any get 90s, 80s is considered pretty damn good....70s is considered ur doing alright, mid 70s is prob a bit a bove average, i think ave is abot 66-73 my rough ave i don really know canadian universities too much since i am giong to US. So like if i were attendnig canada, i know that id aim for high 70s try to break teh 80 mark like in high school i tried hard to break the 90 mark.. but id settle for 75s in university.. NOW in the US and specifically CORNELL what should i be aiming for? i know Bs in math and physics are required for engineers...but in other courses? Also to "go on" to grad school and stuff if ur an 80 in canada ur gold...75 is still probably ull get in unless tehy really dont like u...its actually raelly like our high schools, xept university marks are 10% lower than in high school. To sum it up that was it.. Can somebody give me their best equivalent ideas and stuff for cornell? Shizz if ur reading this id like to hear urs.. Everybody welcome. Cornell i want to get average tio above average by a bit, basically id love to be just comfortably above average and practically gauranteed entrance to grad school...what is the lowest gpa/%/Letter i can get to still basically Gaurantee admittance? how about probability get in but not for sure?? canada = 80 for sure probably...lo.l. and 75 probably. cornell =????????? But being that i wanna be a student athlete...and this is ivy league and engineering physics... i will be satisfied to get the bare minimum required to graduate/average...i hope i can handle it!

For uncurved classes, 90-100% will be A- to A+. 80-90% will be B- to B+ and so on. These are approximate of course.

The problem is that most classes are curved. In that case, equating a percentage to a grade will be difficult. I've had classes where the means on prelims were consistently 50-55%. In that case, all you had to do was get around 70% for an A. That's one end of the spectrum. The other would probably be the uncurved classes where you need 90% for an A.

What about the GPA at Cornell needed for the best engineering graduate schools, like Stanford and MIT, whose average acceptance GPA is around 3.8 (I believe)?

Grad schools understand where students are coming from if its cornell. They know how cornell grades. It's not like its a 2.8 coming from a no-name college. Cornell Engineering is famous.

Also 4=A 3=B 2=C 1=D 0=F
add or subtract .3 for a + or minus; example 3.3=B+

90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D <60=F
within each decile X0-X2 is a - (example 82=B-), X3-X6 is regular (85=B), and X7-X9 is a + (87=B+)

i dont understand taht last part sparticus, the 2nd and 2nd last sentance with the x's what is xo etc? ok..so i guess its EASIER to get an 80 in cornell then newhere in canada?? cuz my sister works so hard and she gets like 70-80 and everyone says it IS GOOD..mid-above average...but i JUST noticed on cornell registrart that NOT ONE course median is below B-, even like quantum physics, mathematical physics, calculus, u name it all!!!! so im guessing one of 2 things...EVERYONE at cornell is way above average or cornell/US system of marks is "easier" ?? seriously if u get 80 in canada, UR GOLDen. cornell seems to be ur the median..which id like to be median-a bit above median i guess.

Martinez, American grading standards, in both high school and college, are far different than those in Canada. Just think of it like the currency conversion... you may have more money but it doesn't mean it's worth more... everything's relative.

You'd probably want a 3.6 or 3.7 to get into Stanford or MIT grad... higher if you want to guarantee a spot.

lol i KNOW its very different thats why im trying my best to find out...its so weird...lol, kidn of stupid if u ask me like how u guys u inches, most places int eh world uses metres even china does! just using % in numbers is far easier... lol, but i still love americans dont get me wrong...u guys are very "traditional" and know ur values..canadians are going wherever US is going or whatever way the wind happens to be blowing that day, lol. So dont think i disrespect americans, i think u got most things better than us, lol
