grades

what do typical BU kids get

That depends entirely on the kid and the difficulty of the program

yeah I though avg. was a 2.8 but then again that sounds kinda low. definitely depends on the school or program and whether or not they're CGS

The average gpa is about a 3.1, from stats a few years old. The trend has been up, but BU has kept the rise in control.

Would CGS students usually have a higher GPA?

Their program is easier relative to the non-CGS programs at BU, so I would think so.

is there grade deflation in engineering?

There's not grade deflation in engineering. I'm pretty sure every single class I've taken so far has been curved up. I took a class where I got a 39 on the first exam and an 80-something on the second exam and I'm not sure how I did on the final, but I got an A- in the class.

thanks heather...could you also check ur PM inbox? I sent you a message about a week ago about bme at BU. Thanks!

Does anyone know if they deflate grades in Biology (CAS) and pre-dentistry?

I think you can only base grade in/deflation on the final grades of students who take a particular course, not on how they curve; most curves are based on the bell curve which is standard and just assesses how well you do in comparison to other people. Grade inflation is life if the majority of students receive a grade of A (what some ivy leagues like Harvard were criticized about a few years back with eighty-something percent getting A's) or grade deflation in which only a very small amount receive A's.

Dirty little secret. Bell curve. Automatically gives Freshman class a GPA of about 2.0. About 1/3 of the students fail to move on at BU. Only 30% get a B or better in any given class. 10% fail. 20% get Ds, 40% get Cs, 20% get Bs, and 10% get As. Perhaps one of the hardest graded programs in the nation.

Are you serious? This is true of every college and course at BU?

PC, you need to check this before you keep saying it. i’ve talked to numerous students in CGS and none are aware that it is graded on a strict bell curve. the curve is likely set in the B range, which is true of most classes at BU. 30% of students are not getting D’s and F’s. The program would cease to exist. Think about it logically. If 30% of the students in CGS were flunking out each year, why would anyone go there?

also TheDow PC was only referring to CGS. other courses and colleges at BU have grading scales set by the professor. most have the curve set in the B range.

What PCVIRGINIABEACHBEACH posted above is completely untrue! CGS has a 93% retention rate and an 83% graduation rate, the same as students who started in other schools at BU.
