Graduate Film?

So...

I've been really interested in pursuing a secondary education in film and television. I was looking at NYU, a great school, but I can't really afford the $55,000/year without a scholarship. Looking elsewhere, I'm looking at USC's program (also fantastic, and I could get an academic scholarship with my 4.0+ GPA). The only problem is that my parents and I don't know if I'm ready to head straight to LA right after high school. My current plan is to go to another university (my main option is FSU, but Ohio U has a good program too) and get a double major in Film/TV and Business, or even a major in Business with a minor in Film. Then I'd apply for a graduate MFA at USC or NYU (my parents said they would be willing to pay for grad school if I get a great scholarship for my 4 year).
The one thing I don't know is how USC and NYU select their grads. Do they give preference to students who have a BA/BFA in Film/TV, or their own alumni. My dad tells me they don't really give preference and look for well-rounded individuals, but it's nice to get a second opinion. Tell me what you guys think.
