I need to graduate as early as possible because it will be difficult for my family to pay for college (I don't get any financial aid and my parents make 30k/year). I will have junior status as a freshman if I choose to enroll at UCLA. I already have most of my GEs and some classes required in my major done from college classes I took during high school. I am a pre biz-econ major.

I just need to take 20 classes at UCLA to graduate with a biz econ degree. I think I can do this over 6 quarters, assuming I get priority enrollement and minor scheduling conflicts. But I heard most biz econ majors pursue an accounting minor? How badly will not having an accounting minor hurt me, if at all? Is it recommended that I minor in accounting? Also how competitive is bizecon?

And I want to graduate with a 4.0 at UCLA. How hard/rare is this? I am pretty good at studying and probably can handle the rigor of classes at UCLA.

Has anyone ever graduated in 2 years with 4.0? I know it will be hard for me to pursue this, but is it possible?

Thank you for reading this post. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know anyone who graduated in 2 years, but I know people have done 2+1quarter or 2+2quarter for history.

If you minor in accounting, you’ll need to stay another year. Graduating with 4.0 is possible, only a few students are capable of achieving this. No one knows how well you will learn the material.

also, as another thread just stated, they’re getting rid of priority enrollment for almost everyone except regents and athletes, so just being in honors does not give you priority anymore

The accounting minor gives you a fallback in terms of profession. With the minor, you can apply for jobs in accounting. If you have no interest in accounting, you don’t have to do it. The minor is just an extra four classes, so most people just do both.

It’s hard to graduate with an exact 4.0. I know people with near 4.0, but not exactly.

30k and no financial aid makes no sense. You should contact UCLA and see whats up. I have the same situation and I get a fair amount of aid.

I am an AB540 student. I guess no one in this forum knows about that.

Basically, I am not eligible for federal/state aid because I don’t have a green card/citizenship. I pay instate tuition, however, according to the AB540 affidavit.

I would love to stay 4 years, but I am not going to do it while being a more financial burden to my family. I can not even attend community college and transfer because I have too many units.

I am not being optimistic. I am forced to undergo this situation because of my status.

I see. Well it’s not the 2 year part itself, but rather the expectation of a 4.0 and especially in 2 years. Finishing in 3 years with a 3.7 is more realisically possible. I mean, bizecon is one of the more competitive majors and people don’t always make it.

It’s not like I am expecting a 4.0 haha. That’s why I asked how hard it was to achieve one.

Thanks, I guess 4.0 is extremely rare. I just wanted to know how hard it was.

What are the classes required in bizecon that lowers most people’s gpa? Like, which classes do I have to watch out for?

But 20 classes in 6 quarters is possible isn’t it? And I thought priority enrollment also went by unit standings. So students with senior standing gets to pick their classes earlier than those with junior standings. Are they getting rid of that too?

Most econ classes are curved, so you have to watch out for the people in your class. There are some teachers that you should avoid, but it depends on your teacher. Check bruinwalk.com for the info on the teachers you may have to take.

Priority enrollment refers to something else. There’s priority enrollment, first pass and second pass. You get priority enrollment based on factors other than units. First pass and second pass are based on the number of units. I don’t have priority, and despite being a 5th year and having near my unit max, I was still not able to get a class I wanted.

20 classes in 6 quarters is possible if you have very little scheduling conflicts.

umm, you realize that even if you take one class a quarter, there’s a chance you won’t graduate with a 4.0.

in two years (and i have no idea how you will logistically plan this out) it would take amazing luck to finish all your required classes. bizecon is in HIGH demand at ucla, thus even your junior status may not be a ticket into every class. on top of that, you have to APPLY for the major after you finish your prereqs. That may burn some valuable time (prolly takes at least a quarter to process).

honestly, just go to community college if finances are THAT bad. Work for your two years in community college and help pay your way for the last two years.

on a side note, the AB540 “law” is one of the stupid pieces of **** that exists…major unfairness

Biz Econ is very competitive, rigorous and demanding. So aim for a 3.5+ (which will be possible with LOTS of hard work).

Where are you getting priority? Enrollment goes by class standing, but it isn’t “priority,” in that you don’t get to enroll before everyone else.

Many of the biz-econ classes are impacted, so setting only 6 quarters for yourself to complete your degree may be unrealistic.

So basically, though I realize your tough situation, I think you need to be a little more realistic; UCLA is a rigorous school, and Biz-Econ is one of the most challenging majors. Just make sure that at the end of the day you’re able to smile on what you’ve accomplished, w/o being so worried about getting everything done with a 4.0 in 2 years.

I didn’t even know of my status (expired visa) until I was 16 because my parents didn’t want to tell me

Yeah so because I am undocumented, I should just not be able to go to school and never amount to anything huh? Even though I do extremely well in school? I am being punished for a mistake my parents made. bruinboy, you have no idea what I had to go through. Despite my circumstances, I strived to succeed. Can I not at least get an education? I also pay taxes. My parents have been paying taxes since I was 7. This is unfair on my part!

I also said I can’t go to community college right now because I have too many units. I already finished all the classes I can take for econ major at college.

Thank you, I understand what priority enrollment means now. I go to a competitive public that sends 60+ to UCLA/Cal every year. I am pretty sure I am ready to take on UCLA classes. I will work hard to get a 4.0 or close to that. Thanks guys.

Even if you have 180 units at your local CC, you can still transfer to UCLA.

So my advice to you would be to do IGETC (look it up in google) and finish all bizecon prerequisites at your local CC. After that, you can apply to UCLA as a transfer student and graduate in one year.

I admit, I’ll be very impressed if you pull off a 4.0 in 2 years. UCLA is notorious for curving grades AND using a quarter system, as opposed to a semester system. That said, best of luck.

Yeah viper, I meant that I finished all my bizecon/econ pre-requisites already. Except 3 of the GEs and Calc II (Math 31B) that is. As far as I know bizecon and econ pre-requisites are same.

Thank you Wolftron09, I will study dilligently to pull of a high gpa.

Also is calc used a lot in econ major? I took AP calc AB last year, but I couldn’t take AP Calc BC because my school didn’t offer it. I want to take Calc BC at cc, but if calc is used a lot in bizecon, I think I should take it at UCLA.
