Graduating in December.

I am one extremely proud mom! My son just found out that he is graduating a semester early. Originally scheduled to graduate in the Spring of 2016 he will now be graduating this December. He just recently told me of his interest in attending grad school with a focus in Sports Administration and perhaps a MBA as well. My questions is how different is the application to grad school when compared to undergrad. Is starting his masters program next spring even an option? I know he is doing the majority of this on his own but with the family trip this summer I figure we could hash a lot of details out and get a plan in motion. Thanks for your help!

Many schools allow you to apply for spring admissions. Applications are typically due in August or September. Very few Ph.D. programs have spring admissions, however, and in my field, very few top 50 programs allow for spring admissions. In some fields, almost all programs are Ph.D. and fall only. Can’t tell you about MBAs.

Starting in the spring could also make it easier or harder to get in (who knows) and more awkward when starting out, both socially and with respect to course sequences if it’s not a large school that offers the same classes (more or less) every semester. It could also make it more difficult to get to know a couple professors for recommendations for summer internships.
