Graduation Dance

Has anyone attending the graduation dance the Friday before graduation? Is it necessary to purchase a table in order to be comfortable? Thanks for any info you can provide.

My daughter graduated a couple of years ago and we did buy a table for Campus Dance because we were a bunch of parents of the students. The only people who sat at the table were the parents; the kids didn’t stop to sit down, and we hardly saw them all evening. If you’re going to have families with you, it might make sense to buy a table so that there’s a place for them to sit. But if you’re just going to be graduates, then you might not need one.

If members of your party can’t stand for a few hours at a time (e.g. grandma) then it’s good to have the guaranteed sitting space but it’s certainly not a necessity. It can also be used as sort of a home base on the quad - especially since it can get very challenging to find people (hard to hear phones - family may not be familiar with campus landmarks, etc.)

Students rarely use tables, and they wander around all night. If you are into dancing, if the weather is nice and you like walking around observing and listening to music, then a table isn’t necessary. I agree with the other advice – if there is an older person involved, if you want a place to meet, to put coats and umbrellas, then a table is nice. Campus dance can be great – but it is loud and can be very cold. Dressing for a semi-formal in 40-degree temps can be challenging.

We had a table as we had 6 family members including grandparents, plus the student and her boyfriend, she only checked in and was off with her class.

I have reserved two tables - one for the family, including elderly grandparents, and one for my daughter as a home base for her and her friends. Several college-aged cousins who don’t attend Brown will also use that table. The dance is very large and spread out, so it’s difficult to find people and nice to have a landing spot.
