Not sure where to post this, but here's the situation:

A family member of mine is a college professor. The college is now requiring that professors attend graduation wearing academic regalia. So this person needs to buy a graduation gown, preferably in the correct color and style for the university where she got her PhD.

Her university bookstore wants something like $800 for the proper gown etc. But it seems to me there must be a cheaper way to get a reasonable facsimile of the proper graduation gear.

There is no cheaper alternative that I know of. You must buy the regalia from your university, and it always costs a fortune. The good news is that you only have to buy one for a lifetime of use. I suppose that there may be a rental source, but I’ve never heard of anyone doing this.

There are lots of places to buy regalia, and you need not buy it from the university bookstore.

One may also rent regalia. That is usually done through a campus bookstore.
