Graduation questions

My son is an upcoming senior. What kind of expenses can we expect to come across? Are senior pictures taken? I already have a motel room booked for graduation weekend. Are caps and gowns rented? Can anybody else think of any other possible expenses? Thanks.

There will be a week where he can sign up to have pictures taken. I REALLY recommend doing this and regret skipping mine. The picture goes into a yearbook that you get for free if you attend graduation. You can also buy any of the photos they take (I think they send you proofs).

They are purchased and required for the large Commencement on Sunday afternoon at the Pete (which I also highly recommend attending). IIRC they cost between $60-80. I can’t remember exactly how much. If your S is graduating with any honors (i.e. above a 3.25 QPA) he will also get honor cords with his robes at no extra charge.

Other expenses: None that I can think of. I joined the Alumni Association when I got my robe. It was $20 for a year and I got 10 or 20% off of diploma frames for signing up. I bought a frame that day at the graduation central area and saved $40 on the frame so it was well worth it.

About 1-2 weeks before graduation Pitt will have a “Graduation Central” set up in Alumni Hall for 2-3 days. You MUST go in to buy your robes if you want to walk at the Pete for commencement. It’s a lot of fun, you buy your robes, can grab a yearbook (with aforementioned photo in it), get a bunch of free stuff, can buy a frame for your diploma, etc.

The senior picture photographer does send a set of proofs. I thought their prices were a bit high but I bought a few pictures. I cannot think of any other expenses.
