For the grammar portion, what improved you the most? A review of the rules on sparknotes? Grammar is my weakest area.

doing all the writing multiple choice parts of 22 practice tests (so like 44 sections lol). then i read the answer explanations. once u get the patterns for the errors that most commonly occur, it becomes easier. i had a 660 the first time on writing, and im sure i definately broke 700 the second time (still waiting scores, 2 more days!)

Get Barron's 2400.
Writing Section.
Grammar rules.
Go over them.

I guarantee an 800 or at least 700+ on Writing after that.

I read that book in the last week of my May SAT.
Scored a 770 on Writing (9 essay).

i second barrons 2400.
it was good for knowing what to be on the lookout for.

i think the most helpful tip i can give is to scratch off prepositional phrases from most sentences, especially the "identify the error" ones. that'll help on questions that test subject/verb agreement (i think this is CB's favorite error btw...)

i scored 75 MC (which was -2) in may with 11 essay.

Wow, you guys are either innately smart, or just studied your butts off. Anyway, I actually own Barron's 2400. How did you guys get such high essay scores though?

9 is not a high essay score but I'm glad I broke the 8 barrier.
Well, basically I think 3 rules make the impression on SAT graders (and I don't think you have much time to make that impression - they only read your thesis in your first para, glance at your 2 examples and then your last sentence ---> all of this in a matter of no more than a minute).

So 3 rules:
1. Fill the goddamn 2 pages.
2. Use fancy words.
3. Remember that this is not an analyticial/descriptive essay but a persuasive essay. So, don't be creative. Be to the point.

You should read this book: Amazon.com: Increase Your Score in 3 Minutes a Day: SAT Essay: Randall McCutcheon, James Schaffer: Books
It's great. I read it in a week, loved it.
Even though it's sort of informal and all, I was able to remember a lot of things on the SAT day. I know I just scored a 9 on the essay, but when I first started preparing I thought I wouldn't even be able to score a 4. It's hard for me to think under pressure. Dunno about you.

Good luck.
