Grammar Question & Question About Baron's

Hey guys, I had the following question that comes from Practice Test 3 in the Baron’s ACT study guide: “One of the most significant historical events in human history (was/is) the columbian exchange.”

Baron’s is saying that “was” is correct. Isn’t this implying that it’s no longer important. Also, isn’t “is” just as grammatically correct?

Lastly, what do you guys think of Baron’s and their explanations? I’m finding some of them to be questionable.

I’ve liked Barron’s so far. I think it is only saying that the event was in the past, unrelated to the significance.
