Grammer baby!

WHEN L 'Enfant suggested TO BUILD the United States Capitol AT THE CENTER OF Washington. D.C. he also OFFERED to design a landscaped mall nearby. NO ERROR

why does TO BUILD not work? the answer is building....why?

Fran WOULD BE HAPPY to assist Brad, had he SIMPLY requested help EARLY ENOUGH TO GIVE her time TO COMPLETE her own assignments.

^answer and explanation please

thanks .^

though anyone else? I’m not 100 % yet…thanks

It should be when he suggested building…

Though I can’t tell you the rule that says why.

Building - when choosing between infinitives and gerunds, one must use their ear. there is no rule that constitutes this distinction. suggested to build just sounds weird

Would have been happy - I think

^^

For 2 Kieran is right. The correct tense form is “would have been happy”. The event to which this refers occurred in the past. The past perfect “had he asked” provides the timeline.

If we keep “WOULD BE HAPPY” the sentence could be:

Fran WOULD BE HAPPY to assist Brad, if he SIMPLY requests help EARLY ENOUGH TO GIVE her time TO COMPLETE her own assignments.
