Grand Canyon University Finance & Economics Vs. Accounting

Good evening everyone,

I have just returned from my Active Duty training with the Marine Corps and have found Grand Canyon University to be my choice of college for my Bachelor's degree.

However, I am stuck between choosing their Finance & Economics program or their Accounting program.

Here is a link to both programs:

Finance & Economics - Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics | Grand Canyon University

Accounting - Bachelor of Science in Accounting | Grand Canyon University

I am a transfer student and based on my own due diligence, the programs are about the same as far as courses go until the last year. In addition to this, if I were to major in accounting I would have to take two extra courses to finish the degree.

The part that is troubling me is, I have taken two accounting courses already and neither liked nor disliked them and I received A's in both courses. It wasn't the most exciting stuff but I grasped the info. That is why I am not sure what to choose for my major because I have taken courses in both finance and accounting and enjoyed both and received the same grades.

I am not sure what I would like to do in the civilian sector when I graduate. This is because all I truely want to do is get my degree and go to Officer Candidate School and continue to serve my country as an officer.

So my goal with the degree is basically to have somthing to fall back on should I decide not to go to OCS.

I have researched this topic on CC as well as Google and still feel like this thread is necessary given the wild card of possibly applying to OCS.

Finance & Economics is more general. It’s probably more interesting to most people, and it sounds like you fall into that category.

Accounting is much more specific, but every organization bigger than a lemonade stand depends on accounting to function, especially the government(s) and the military. But many organizations don’t have much need for finance or economics knowledge, especially the military.

I hope that you’re not yet too committed to GCU. Their accreditation is very weak. They seem to be a classic case of a for-profit take-over of a struggling not-for-profit in order to buy some per-existing accreditation and credibility. You should watch the Frontline show titled “College Inc.”. It is available for free streaming online.
