Graphic Design/Visual Arts portfolio

I’m a junior and am currently planning on majoring in either film, graphic design (most likely), or entertainment design. Ideally I’d like to go to a university with a strong GD program, like UCLA, Yale or USC. Art school is also a possibility.

I’d appreciate opinions on my portfolio and whether it’s of the caliber that the top schools look for. Mostly illustration with a few photos because of the site limits, though I also do web/branding design and some digital painting. Crit always appreciated!

UCLA’s design program isn’t strictly graphic design. It seems pretty freewheeling and students experiment in a lot of different mediums. I think they look for experimentation and variety, so I’d focus on more than just illustration.

Know nothing about USC or Yale, except that they’re hard to get into! lol. Good luck!

take a look at VCUarts. #2 program in the country , tied with UCLA and just behind Yale

draw more from real observation. Those programs are looking for artistic skills and it might be a good idea to show proficiency with the basics.

Tyler in Philadelphia has an excellent graphic & interactive design program. As for your portfolio, what you have is very creative but art schools are also going to want to see some drawing from observation samples. Just draw what you see around your home or outside.
