Anyone know of schools with good Graphic Design programs, or rankings for this major if there are any?

risd is the likely top choice. taxguy will be here shortly to give you his opinion. i like calarts because ed fella and jeff keedy teach there. you won't find 2 faculty of that quality most anywhere. both are extremely relevant, historically. scad was a good choice for me.

imo from the research i've done, the schools that seem to have the best kind of reputations are risd and art center. those two schools have consistently produced such great designers. though i have heard of rumours re: art center about how their program is not as good as it used to be (though still better than the average)

Just check out US News Reports for graphic design ratings. Although they do rate graduate schools, the theory is that a strong graduate program will translate to strong undergraduate programs. Accordingly, the top rated programs by them are:

RISD
2 Yale

Cranbrook Academy ( only graduate)

Pratt

CMU

I don't remember the order of ratings but I know that SVA, Parsons, and others were there too. The above-noted schools are just the ones that I can remember.

I don't know anything about other schools' programs such as SCAD, CalArts, University of Cincinnati etc. You may want to check these out too, especially University of Cincinnati, which seems to have strong, high-rated programs in many design areas.

Sorry, I don't know anything about Art Center other than they have a top rated program in Industrial Design.

I should note that the US News Ratings of Fine Arts programs and Graphic Design programs occured in 2003. I don't think that they did an updated survey. Thus, there might be better schools that those noted. Three year old ratings are a bit dated.

My d also liked the programs at Syracuse U (graphic communications & advertising design majors) and RIT. She's currently a GD major at RIT.

Yes, I forgot about RIT, Duh! It also has a good reputation for graphic design.

TG,

Congrats on your D's merit award at RIT. Sounds like her choices are growing. How many schools is she still waiting to hear from?

M&sdad, if you are addressing me, my daughter is still awaiting CMU and RISD. However, with the scholarship that she got at RIT and what we think she will get at Cincinnati, I am hardpressed to recommend either CMU or RISD over these schools at double the price of Cincinnati or RIT.

taxguy,
I'm glad to hear your d has some affordable choices (I didn't know much about Cincinnati before your reviews). In my d's case, SU & RIT offered good merit & FA packages, making them both affordable.
