Does anyone know if the Graphic Design program at TCNJ is good or not?

"Cheese" - I had posted the following back in September, and never received a reply. I will add my question to yours and hopefully we will encourage a current student or parent to respond.

"Does anyone have any direct experience with TCNJ's graphic design department, or know anyone who does? We have read the website/course info, but are interested in an insider's perspective on the major. How are the professors?, approximately how many students are in the major?, what are internships like?, etc. Thanks!"

Are you considering attending the Accepted Students Day on the 4th? Or are you just starting your research at this point? We were wondering whether there would be any info about the GD program then, or any opportunity to meet other interested students. I know that they are building a new art building, but I don't think it's been completed yet, so we won't get to check that out. My daughter is also reluctant to complete the honors application at this point, since she's not sure if she will be attending TCNJ anyway, and is not sure how much difference honors will make if she's a BFA graphic design major.

Any thoughts anyone?

I'm currently a junior and only a GD minor, but I'll try my best to answer your questions. Personally, I think the Graphic Design dept has small, but a mostly great faculty and I believe it's one of the more, if not most, popular program out of all the art programs here. Unfortunately, the current GD coordinator, Fanky Chak, is going on sabbatical for one year, starting the upcoming fall. IMO, hes the best professor out of the GD faculty, but the other professors are all very knowledgeable and accomplished. As for how many students are in the major I cant be too sure because there are also minors and transfers to consider, but I would say there are at least 10-15 students in the major per year(freshmen, sophomores, etc.) and increasing. Classes go up to perhaps 25 people max? GD majors are the luckiest in the art dept in terms of internships because most of the internships offered are for GD. We get info about opportunities via email, or potentially through our career services (although thats mostly geared towards business majors). At the end of your senior year, you have a senior review where all the graduating seniors set up their portfolios in a room and people like faculty, recruiters and students can come in and look.

Oh yea, as for honors program, I find that generally useless. It has been made clear to me that recruiters in the art field could care less about your grades or if you graduated with honors. It's all about the portfolio. This is something I definitely wish I knew about sooner.
