graphing calculators

Does anyone know if the UM provides free graphing calculators as in high school? Are graphing calculators necessary for college math?

You guys got free calculators? Geez, we had to buy our own…

Our high school never gave us free graphing calculators. We could borrow one if we couldn’t afford one, but it was safe to say that didn’t apply to almost all of us.

^I’m sure that’s what he meant. Our highschool did that too.

you will need your own.

Our school actually mandated the purchase of calculators for every student in 8th grade.

…? Private school?

Michigan does not provide for a calculator. For college math and college sciences, it is recommended that you purchase a graphing calculator and a non-graphing calculator for those classes that don’t trust graphing calculators.

Public, sadly.

T-89 will work, right? What level classes would you need a more advanced calculator?

Probably never.

My bad, I meant T-84.

My guess is, the more advanced the math class, the less you’ll need a calculator.
But TI-84 should suffice for all your classes.

strife15, so what if you did not buy one?

I don’t see how a public school can require students buy calculators.

This might seem like a stupid question, but for some reason I keep thinking that I don’t have to buy notebooks and stuff for college.

Do I have to buy the same supplies as I would for high school?

What I mean by supplies I mean, notebooks, pencils, calculators, etc…

It depends. If you want to take notes in class, then yes you will want to buy notebooks (or a laptop). As far as anything being a neccessity, it really depends on your own habits as well as the classes you are taking.

i have a TI 83, is that good enough for calculus 3?

Hey square, I’m a senior and I’m required to have a TI-89 for my AP calc class. I don’t think a TI-83 would work for a college calculus class.

Hey Entertainer, I don’t think colleges supply those things so I’d defiantly at least bring a pencil and paper for notes. It’s probably not required, but I like to stay on the top of things (then again, I don’t really know; I’m just a noob high school senior =[).

I keep thinking that with all the money I’m paying for college, that I should be given notebooks and other stuff. I’m going to buy notebooks and stuff for college, but I keep thinking that all these things are going to be supplied. I was shocked that I only get 400 pages of printing paper at U-M. What a RIP!

Yeah, I agree. Check out the sales at OfficeMax. I just bought me notebooks for 1 cent each (only 3 per customer, but our whole family went and we bought a bunch xD)!

Just wondering though, it is 400 pages per semester or per year or something like that? That doesn’t sound too bad for me (I’ve always gotten all the free printing I’ve wanted, but I’ve never needed to print so much).
