Berkeley (undeclared - business) - match
UCLA (bizecon) - match
Cornell (hotel management) - slight reach (especially because you don’t seem to have any hotel experience)
Dartmouth (math and econ) - slight reach
Johns Hopkins (math and econ) - high match
U Chicago (math and econ) - high match (especially if you are a good writer)
WUSTL (math and econ) - match
Occidental (business) - lower match
U Penn (Wharton) - reach (UPenn has been unforgiving this year and Wharton is especially difficult. If your essay about working for your dad showed passion for business, maybe)
U of Southern California (Marshall business school) - match

I don’t think UC’s really care what major you apply under. As for private schools, I was under the impression that the college you apply to matters but not the major.

Your SAT scores are definitely on the weaker side, but your GPA and extra curriculars look solid. If your essays are amazing and you have some good letters of recs vouching for you, you have good chances at the schools you chose. I’ve seen more people with perfect SAT/GPAs get rejected from top schools than people with lower stats but obvious passion and great essays. All in all, this year is a tough year to apply, but good luck nonetheless! :]

Thanks peaceofcake. Chanced you back! Hopefully my essays pull me through at Chicago and Penn. For Cornell, I showed how translating for my parents (as cliche as that sounds) has helped me gain hospitality management skills. And I connected it to how it makes me a good fit at hotel management major. I spent couple weeks on the essay so it should be good.

i think you have a high chance at many of those schs, other than maybe darmouth and wharton… your scores aren’t that low, it’s just by CC standards that they are maybe abit below average.

if your essays are truly exceptional/moving, i think they can make a major difference to your chances. if you don’t mind i would like to take a read
(i am a senior who has already submitted all my apps)

Confidentiality, if you look up parochial, it means “narrow”. It doesn’t mean the work itself wasn’t impressive, it means that working for your dad and your other activities may give the impression of kind of a narrow experience. Personally, I think these kind of experiences are great but high level schools may want to see more venturing out.

As far as AA is concerned, my point was that you may benefit from the “diversity” hunt in the economic sense. I don’t know if you are big headed or not but I’m telling you that you are coming across that way so you need to be make sure that is not the case in your presentation to colleges.
I wish you luck.

okgal, I know what parochial means. I don’t think I ever indicated from my previous post that I thought parochial meant the “work itself wasn’t impressive.” And I don’t understand how my responsibilities “give the impression of kind of a narrow experiences.” In any case, I appreciate your opinions and in no ways did I present myself as bigheaded to the college I have applied to. If you felt that way, that was not what I intended. Thank you for the good luck. :D

Sorry 1234d, I am not letting just anyone I talked to online read my essays (no offense). I just don’t want to risk finding my essays posted online or something without my consent. I am sure you won’t do such a thing, but I just don’t want to risk it. Plus its very private and personal so I would be very uneasy to let someone who I don’t know to read them. Thank you for your input though! :D

What exactly is a “hook”? I keep hearing about it but dont understand it. is it smething like, “I was born in Africa” like something intriguing or what?

hahaha lol trulybizarre. a hook is something like a special talent. maybe you’re a nationally ranked…uh…swimmer or gymnast or musician or something. or you’re a celebrity. or royalty. yeah.

but mostly talent. if you’re really really passionate about something and show that in your app/essays, that’s a hook.

Honestly, unless u got some legit awards and jus outstanding essays. Ur chances are slim at TOP schools. Although i do believe you are a match for Berekley if ur In state
WUSTL and Chicago are high matches
GET THOSE SCORES UP!!! Pretty sure they would much rather see a 2250 with a few less EC’s, bombarding them with a bunch of EC’s doesnt really help.
