great journalism schools

does anybody know of any great colleges for journalism and/or mass communications? i already know of NYU and Berkeley, anymore?

Northwestern University, Columbia University, University of Missouri... By far the three best.

Syracuse U Newhouse School
Arizona State Cronkite School

Columbia doesn't have undergrad journalism. And I'm going to add Ohio U. because I want to go there :)

All I saw was "colleges for journalism". I didn't want to assume undergrad....

i want to go to j school too...

Northwestern, Missouri, Syracuse, UNC, UMD, USC, Boston U, American
come to mind now.

It really depends on what type of journalism too- Northwestern is good for all journalism, but Syracuse seems to be better for broadcast, MD better for news-based journalism (proximity to DC), etc...

From an adcom at a school we visited with my daughter this summer:

You have to divide undergraduate journalism schools into two classes--the bigger schools, with a full range of programs, and programs which are more limited in scope. NYU and BU are outstanding examples of the latter. The advantage of the former schools is greater alumni network and contacts, more opportunities for internships, etc. as a result, and, in some cases, greater opportunities at on-campus newspapers/radio stations/TV stations. For example, the University of Missouri-Columbia publishes the town newspaer in addition to a student newspaper, and operates the NBC affiliate for middle Missouri. It would be hard to get opportunities of the type available there at smaller schools.

In the larger school category, the adcom indicated that the five programs generally regarded as being the best/most highly regarded were (in alphabetical order) Northwestern University, Syracuse University, University of Southern California, University of Missouri-Columbia, and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Right below that group, he mentioned (again, alphabetically) Penn State University, University of Miami (Florida) and University of Texas-Austin for their overall programs, and four schools in particular areas--Ohio University (print journalism), UCLA (film), University of Illinois-Champaign (advertising), and University of Maryland-College Park (political reporting). He then mentioned a series of other schools, most of which I can't remember (Florida and Indiana were included).

As to the smaller schools, as I mentioned, he said NYU and BU stood out. The group we were in focused its questions on the larger schools, so that's pretty much as far as it went.

Others on these boards, like Carolyn, who is a practicing journalist, can supply you with more info, particularly in regards to smaller school programs. Hope this helps.

yeah its been said several times already, but northwestern is great for journalism

1) Columbia (for grad school)
2) Northwestern
3) University of Georgia

What I could find

The George Washington Univ. and American University both have solid J departments, and DC is great for internships and the political adrenalin.
