Great Profile Low SSAT.. any ideas

"you have excellent chances IMHO."
This is EXTREMELY misleading, no one, i am saying , no one has an "excellent" chance at AESDCH... and you are saying someone with sub-par SSAT scores has "excellent" chance...

as I always say, giving people unneccessary hope is just as irresponsible as hurting people verbally without reason......

and some schools, hotchkiss for example, has higher admit rate for nonboarders(we are in the middle of nowhere, go figure)

There is something fishy about this poster.I got wierd PM from poster called "Wak Paky" 2 days ago.Gave a detailed response just like all of you, this cat continued to persist.Don't feed into it.

I am so sorry Farncis... that even after my response to your PM you decided to flame.

Because I could NOT post before today!!! had to re-register under GMAIL to be able to validate signup... and got SOME of the answers....

Go back and re-read my posts, I believe in the collective wisdom of the masses... and am looking for ideas...

Not everything is a conspiracy...

It was a helpful parent who pointed out that I should look for a recommendation... legacy etc.. to write on behalf of my kid...

Before last night I had not thought of it... and with a bit of research I found some one who we know very well... and who went to one of the schools that my D has applied to...
AliJ is invisible

Time waster

a warning that is accurate is not a flame

Hi Saberiel121 yes we did visit Milton.. when were you there.. maybe we did run into each other?

hi Bearcats.. thankfully we had nothing as horrowing as the girl from afghanistan.. but waking up to find out your school has been blown up, and a lot of teachers injured is a jarring experience for any one.

I think they have loosely based a movie on the whole episode, it should come out this summer, called The Kingdom

Which school do you go to?

PSMOM and preppaenttoo, I sure hope both of you are right... we went to 10 schools and can honestly say that we loved at least 9 of them

The opportunities they give to the kids are just amazing, something our local school can never afford, heck they cant even afford teachers. Would you believe they have combined grades (1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th) to save money!!!

And compare that to some of these schools where they have 26 top notch people just for Music.. WoW... I wish my college was as good :)

Quite right! You are correct bearcats! I need to define my terms. I’ll define excellent as a 1/3 chance of acceptance. ALL applicants at SPS for example are ~1/5 (19% acceptance rate by their own literature). That is ALL! That's right out of the box. It includes applications that are late, applications with bad recommendations, applications with poor essays, applications with poor interviews, and applications that are incomplete. Factor in late applicants, (very low acceptance rate but still counted as applicants), applicants to grades 10, 11, and 12, (again lower acceptance rate than 9th graders) etc.... and you are less than 1/5. Perhaps 1/3 -- EXCELLENT -- my definition. Apply to 3 or more schools -- (sound familiar??), and guess what???

BTW -- Hope is never unnecessary... look it up.

So, if I read through this thread correctly, AliJ's daughter is an american/pakistani. She isn't bahraini (or whatever a person from bahrain is called) Does that make her an international student or just another american kid applying - albeit an expat with a somewhat more intriguing background than just another kid from MA, CT, NY?

Francis: you are an insolent brat with no respect for anyone, let alone an elder.

i think they count as a international student because Alij's daughter lives in the middle east, because they base you by the location you're currently living in

Chunky you are right, they do count her as an international. Actually she is a dual citizen and has not lived in US since she was 9 months old.

prepparenttoo, THANK you for doing the math, it does give us more insight into how the numbers work. I showed it to my daughter and she was "wow" that is so obvious, please tell this person I said "thanks", so her you go Thanks from my D :)

I think her chance is just like any other average applicant, yes, demographically underrepresented helps, but SSAT in 70s hurts a lot for non legacies. so i m guesing it's probably around 1/4 - 1/5 chance....remember, you also have to factor in the fact that some people just automatically get in due to connections, legacies, money, strong pool by coaches for athletics..all those sorts of things....those kids get a free pass, so the real spots for admissions is like 70% of the original admitted pool.

I am by no means trying to discourage AliJ but in fact trying to analyze rationally...

Thank god I take AP Stats, AliJ's Daughter is applying to 10 schools

If she has a 1/5 chance at each school, the chance for getting rejected by 10 schools is 10%

If she has 1/4 chance, the chance for getting rejected by 10 schools is 5%

If she has 1/3 chance , the chance for getting rejected by all is 2%

If only boarding school admissions results were a normally distributed, random, non-correlated set of outcomes.

doesnt have to be normally distributed...I am using binomial probablity

the only requirement is

BINS

binomial- yes either get in or not get in

Independence - yes, getting accepted at one school change the other school's decision

N- sample size fixed, true, it's always 10

S- probablility of getting in, fixed, as defined

therefore I can use it binomial probability,i wasnt using z-score

Bearcats, though the numbers are statistically correct, it does not quite work that way in elite school admissions because of al of the issues that go into a decision. We see kids who apply to only top colleges get burned that way all of the time.

Also you never know what your chances really are. They may truly be 0% at a school where many applicants are qualified legacies or other special category. I have seen that time and again. Though it's nice to do a statitical analysis, when you are looking at things that have subjective factors, don't take it to heart. Aas an individual, all that matter in the end is whether you get in or not.

isnt it what i hav been saying the whole time?
i was just doing the calculation according to prepparenttoo's way

My D's vote is for the STATS... go bearcats!!! I am proud of her just for trying, and if she gets in ... fantastic, if she does not... so what, she can always try again and next time she will be wiser for it..

Just like any parent I am anxious for her, and only want the best for her! Yes these schools are an Excellent opportunity, but so is the whole application process and a bit of reality check.

Either way she wins and will always be a winner in my books :)
