Great Summer Programs for Creative Writing

@starkly Well, don’t give up hope yet. I’m sure some will get off the waiting list. Why don’t you write them an email stating that you are still very interested and will attend if admitted? NYU sounds like a perfect opportunity for you, too!

@desie1‌ Yes, I heard Kenyon makes you do all the genres, whereas Sewanee wants you to pick one of four genres: playwriting, poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction. Although I was tempted to go to Kenyon in order to become a more versatile writer, I ended up choosing Sewanee since it’s closer to home.

@starkly‌ I’m not sure which session I was accepted for. I haven’t even seen my acceptance letter yet; my parents called me and told me my results. >.<

@desie1 Good idea; will do. I feel a lot better now than I did earlier; rejection is hard, but I have a good network of friends who offered their shoulders.

@sunbloom Have fun at Sewanee! Almost went out for it last year, but I expected to get into Kenyon (dumb). I did a lot of research into it though and it looks pretty amazing. I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

It’s so funny how these things work. The one I thought my daughter would get is UVa, but she got wait-listed. But she got Sewanee and Kenyon. I think Sewanee is a better fit for her, but it’s completely her decision.

Anyone have any insight between the two: Sewanne or Kenyon?

My daughter, a junior, just received her acceptance letter from Kenyon’s summer camp! She’s super excited. We’re now waiting to hear from Iowa this week. Does anybody have comments on how the two programs compare? Are they equally competitive and prestigious?

My daughter is going to Sewanee over Kenyon. Anyone else?

@slushy. Iowa released results on April 1st. Didn’t she receive an email?

My daughter chose Kenyon. Hopefully it will be a terrific experience. I think that both programs sounded wonderful, so either choice was a “win.”

Hi, everyone! Turns out, I’ll be going to Kenyon as well as Sewanee. >.< I’ll be attending Session II, so I’ll have time for both! Which session is your daughter attending, @desie1 ?

PS. Do any Sewanee people know when we have to arrive on campus by? I seem to have misplaced the information letter…

@sunbloom My daughter is doing session 1 of Kenyon; she had other plans when session 2 is being held; that’s why she had to choose between Kenyon and Sewanee. I can’t wait to hear which one you like better! I believe the Sewanee arrival was June 28th (same as Kenyon session 1), but double-check on their website because I no longer have the paper work.

@sunbloom You have to be at the Sewanee Campus by 3:30 I believe in order to attend the orientation on June 28th. If you are flying by yourself then you have to be at the Nashville airport by one or 1:30 or the Chattanooga airport by 2:30 I believe. I’m coming from California so I have to take a redeye that lands around seven in order to be there in time. I would double check on their website because if you are not flying by yourself there are 3 different orientation sessions you can attend. Can’t wait to meet you there!

@sunbloom Since you are the only one on CC that participated in both programs, I’d love to know your impressions and comparison of the two. As you may remember, my daughter struggled to make her decision and finally chose Kenyon. She had a wonderful time and learned a lot. Her only complaint was that the food was truly awful. (She NEVER complains about food so it must have been really bad!) Overall she is really glad she went!

@ dutch18 @sfijm23. Since my daughter chose Kenyon, I am curious to hear how Sewanee turned out?
