I'm a UNC freshman, ask me anything!

Hi everyone,

As you all probably know, decisions are coming out this week and I’m so excited for all of you future Tar Heels. Decision day was one of the best days of my life. I am currently in my second semester of my freshman year here at Carolina and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. I had a previous account I used during the college application process and created a new one for answering questions. I can answer questions about admissions (very familiar with the UNC process), classes, majors, campus life, greek life, Chapel Hill as a town, etc.

Ask away!

What is Greek life(more specifically sororities ) like at UNC? Also, what is your favorite part about UNC? Thanks!!

@collegeready33 I’m in a fraternity so I probably can’t give you an extremely specific description of sorority life at UNC, but I’ll tell you what I know from my friends and experiences. Sorority and greek life in general at UNC is great, and all of the girls I know in sororities absolutely love it. It’s a great way to meet new people, whether it be through mixers (sororities and fraternities having themed parties together, “mixing” the fraternity and sorority members together), cocktails (date parties, often themed), fraternity parties, etc. Most of the sorority girls here hang out mostly with girls in their pledge class, but friend groups are not limited to your sorority/fraternity. However, rush, specifically girl’s rush, is a very rigorous and stressful process here at UNC, not gonna lie. A lot of girls are disheartened because they got cut by a top house, but that’s expected if you’re not a legacy, don’t come from a “feeder” high school, don’t know people in that house, or aren’t wealthy. It kind of sucks but that’s the way it is. My best advice for rush is to not let it get you down and to see it through because you ultimately end up in the house you belong in, and you’ll love it.

As for my favorite part about UNC, I love the combination and balance of everything here. You have renowned and challenging academics, fun party atmosphere, great college town, incredible athletic program, beautiful campus, great greek life, etc. You’re never bored here and it provides, in my opinion, the perfect college experience.

@2020heels Thanks!!

Where you instate or out? Do you mind sharing your stats that got you in?

If you are instate, do you recall what percentage of the kids that applied got in?

@Joe2015 I am in-state, and I had a 34 ACT and around a 3.7 unweighted (a lot of AP’s) at a competitive high school. Captain of varsity sports teams, president/founder of a charitable club at my school, and the usual stuff like NHS.

Of everyone who applied at my school, about a third got in and I believe the in-state acceptance rate for UNC is around 50ish percent

what is Chapel Hill’s general political leanings? I applied and am a Democrat, so I wanna make sure I’ll feel like I fit well if admitted. Also, are there any undocumented students in the school, and if they are, how are they treated, etc.?

@johonmilla the school and town are very left-leaning, but there are a decent number of conservatives/republicans to balance things out a bit. If you’re a democrat, you’ll be fine here. I’m not entirely sure if there are undocumented students at the school, but protests and activism are going on right now to make UNC a sanctuary school for undocumented students

Hey! I have a 35 ACT and 3.67 unweighted, and 4.67 weighted. Extracurriculars should be alright but what i’m worried about is my unweighted GPA. What do you think?

@GBOUSLOV if you are instate you are good.

@Joe2015 I am. I hope so.

@GBOUSLOV if you’re in-state, you should fine as long as you’re taking challenging classes because I got in with similar stats. Out of state, it’s harder to say really. Your ACT is really good and if your extracurriculars and essays are good (both are really important for UNC admissions), I think you have a good shot. However, I’m not an admissions officer and this is my opinion, but you’ll find out for sure soon enough.

@2020heels I am in-state! I have a total of 7 AP’s including Calculus AB and BC, so I don’t think course rigor should be an issue. Extracurriculars are decent (100+ volunteering hours at YMCA, VP of speech and debate, spanish honor society). I appreciate the opinion and i’ll find out soon enough for sure.

So I’m sure you get this a lot but I was wondering if you could assess my chances of getting in…
I’m an in state applicant
I have been at UNCG Middle College for 9-10th grade and at Greensboro College Middle College for 11-12th.
I have a 3.7 unweighted GPA and I am 5 out of 60 at my school.
I got a 1320/1600 on my SAT
I have a ton of extracurriculars (student government, yearbook, planning, volunteer work, etc)
I have taken 3 AP classes (AP Microeconomics- I got a 4, AP Language and Comp- I got a 3, and AP world History which I got a 2 on :frowning: )
I got really good recommendations (my teachers let me read them after they submitted it and I turned in my application)
What do you think?

I forgot to add that I have almost 44 credit hours in college classes

Also I am taking another AP class this semester which I am sure I will do well on

What other schools were you considering, and what made you choose UNC?

Also, how do you feel about your dorm? Did you get your first pick?

@snapslater I’d be shocked if you were denied. You’re basically guaranteed to get in, as long as your essays are good. (Going to a early/middle college looks amazing to admissions officers. I have a friend who did that and is going to Caltech.) Do not rest on your laurels, though. Just keep working hard, and you’ll likely be accepted.

@Hopeso1 thank you so much! I had many people review my essays. For my 2 short essays, I picked the “what do you think will be the most important innovation in the next 10 years” (I’m paraphrasing) and I wrote about cheap renewable energy, and the second one I picked the “what are your goals for the next 10 days, 10 months, 10 years?” and I talked a lot about my education and goals to be a doctor. I had a lot of people tell me they were great. I have also read my recommendation letters (after I sent out my application) and they were good. I am just very anxious :frowning:

I guess I’ll ask one more question. What were your stats like?
