Greek Life for Pre-meds

ok sooo this is the dilemma that has been bothering me. I will be entering as a freshman in the fall as a psych major on the pre-med track in the honors college. I like the idea of being in a sorority, but am worried that it will interfere with my studying/volunteering. has anyone been in this similar situation? is it tolerable? which house would you suggest? and is it perhaps better to rush informally in the spring?

I would recommend you do it in fall and maybe take classes that you AP’ed in HS your first semester or at least classes that wouldnt contain totally new concepts. One thing you dont want to screw up is your GPA. However, you know your strengths the best and time management would be key.

I only know a few greek pre-meds (well med students now). Only frats though, so I dont know much about the rush/pledge time commitment for sororities.

hmm well i just signed up for my classes at preview…
i’ll be taking calc 2, gen chem, an easy honors course, pro dev, and social psych
i don’t know what to do!

Whats you math and chem background?

As with most psych classes, it most reading. So just allot time for that.

Is pro development like a 1 credit class?

umm well i just took calc AB this past year and i haven’t taken a chem class since sophomore year in high school…

Why the calc 2? Have a math interest? I know psych majors dont require it. Just pre-cal or cal and stat 1 and 2.

umm well i don’t really like calc at all actually, but a lot of the med schools i hope to apply to prefer if calc one and two is taken

Really, I can only think of 2 (harvard and WUSTL) that require calc 2 and the rest only care that you finish a year of math.

I would probably recommend taking calc 1, stats 1, and stats 2. If you really want to take calc 2, then maybe take it in spring and take stats 1 in fall.

Actually 3 schools: Harvard, WUSTL, and JHU

hmmm i have a dilemma now!

i don’t want to limit myself by not taking calc 2, but then again i don’t want to hurt my gpa with a hard class

Maybe when you attend rush in fall, you can ask some of the sisters who are pre-meds for some input.

well i can’t change my schedule until august third now…do you think it would be difficult to drop my calc class and pick up stat if i had to?

No, people are always dropping and adding classes. Plus stat 1 has a bunch of seats. You might be able to add it know and then decide what to drop later on. I was able to change around my schedule after preview, have signed in (ISIS) to see if that available.

Do you think they will see that I am signed up for 18 credits and be upset even though I don’t really plan on actually taking all those courses (as I would either drop calc or stat)?

The don’t care. I think I was signed up for 18 credits every semester because I was unsure what class I would end up with. My interests are vast, so picking classes tended to be problematic for me.

ohhh ok. well I added a stat course, but it appears to be online. are those regarded differently from in class lectures, or is it simply a space issue?

Yeah, its online, but you can attend the live taping if you want to. The lab part is once a week, but is generally its a cakewalk with most TAs. The biggest problem with online classes is that people will put off watching the lectures and end up watch 10 or how many lectures before the exam.

alright cooool. well i guess i’ll ponder what i should do on the matter. thanks for all your help though!

Your welcome. Are you starting summer b or fall? Because if its summer, you could always sit in on a class or two and see if you like it or at least be able to handle the material.

One of the professors, Moore, has posted some of his material online if you want to see what the material is like.

[Theral Moore](Theral Moore | Department of Mathematics)

definitely manageable. i know plent of pre meds in greek life (myself being one) and think its fine. you can make time for everything. the way i look at it is dont exclude yourself from opportunities without trying them coming in as a freshmen. you can balance plenty of things.
