Greek Life for Transfers at UVA

Hi! I have just been informed that I have been accepted as a transfer to UVA for the fall 2010 semester and am very excited! I am planning on probably getting involved in Greek life upon enrolling as a way to meet people. I will be a junior. What does this mean in terms of rushing/pledging? Can juniors do it? Are transfers encouraged to? Do all sororities have rushing/pledging in the fall? Can anyone tell me anything about any of the sororities? Thanks!

Sororities generally don’t accept third or even second years. There are exceptions though and it’s well worth doing.

UVa holds rush in the spring semester. However I do not know if this means that membership can not be extended during the fall semester.

Hmmm ok thanks. Are either of you in sororities at UVA?

Check out this page for information about UVA Greek life:

UVA offers a fall rush for transfers and upperclass women (informal). Not all sororities will participate in informal rush. I don’t know if each sorority has an individual policy on the age of students they will accept but I know of at least one third year who joined a sorority as a transfer student.

There will be tons of activities to become involved with once you are on Grounds. Project Serve is a great way to meet people and there is also a fall activities fair where you can learn more about different organizations.

No, I’m not. My son is a Jr./ rising Sr. My husband and I were both Greek and enjoyed it as part of our college experience. We had mentioned our son might want to wait until his sophomore year to go through rush, get his feet on the ground, etc.

He is interested in UVa and during one of his visits, on a student led tour, he learned that rush is held during the spring semester. We thought this was a great idea to help the students get settled, get to know the greek system, better make a decision if they want to pledge, and which ones they are interested in learning more about.

It looks like your are getting some great information to fill in the blanks from some current students. I love CC!

Congratulations on your acceptance to UVa! Good luck!! :)

I’m in a fraternity.
