Greek Life on Campus (Fraternity)

Hello, I am a prospective student for the Class of 2024. I do not know much about Greek Life (fraternities specifically), but I am interested in potentially rushing as I am drawn to the social aspect and brotherhood.

I was wondering if you could provide insight into the diversity if I were to rush as a non-white male, and if that plays a role. I’m also mildly concerned about hazing and just overall reputations of fraternities on campus.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah I’m involved on greek life on campus, wasn’t really expecting to rush but I went with one of my friends and really enjoyed it.

As a nonwhite male you can choose between rushing multicultural (with organizations designed to celebrate latino, asian cultures) or social (general fraternities, range from your stereotypical frat bros to triangle, an engineering fraternity). There also are professional fraternities but those almost more similar to clubs. You can be in a social/multicultural fraternity in addition to a professional fraternity if you really want.

A good amount of greek life is obsessed with social climbing. You’ll probably figure out more about that as you get into school. People probably will tell you about tiers and a bunch of rumors about each fraternity. Ignore them, as someone who’s in it I learned a lot that I wish I knew when I was rushing. People make stuff up about rival houses to tell freshmen so that their own house can climb.

There’ll be an IFC open forum. Go to that even if they tell you rush is deferred or anything like that. Talk to people (even the tables without super long lines), write down your contact info, then attend open houses and just find guys you like. If nothing else it’ll get you free booze when they invite rushees to events.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me if thats even a thing on here idk bc I don’t use college confidential. I don’t really wanna drag down any organizations through the mud on here.
