Greek life

Im trying to deciede which college i would like to attend. i know i shouldnt base my decvision based on greek life, but its dead even beetween clemson and ohio university. this my be the tipping point. are clemson frats full of cocky preppy people or is it more of a chill situation? im from up north in new york so greek life is much different up here. thanks

It really depends on which fraternity you belong to. There are a number of the cocky, preppy types which is a common trait among Southern fraternities. I also think that many of them come across in that manner, but as they mature and you get to know them they are usually pretty ok guys.

All of the fraternities are not like that and some have more of a Northern influence. Greek life is definitely big at Clemson, not if you just look at numbers (I think by numbers a little over 20% of students are Greek) but as far as involvement in much of what goes on around campus. Many Student Gov’t leaders and the leadership of a number of honors fraternities and field of study related clubs are members of the Greek community.

Any Southern university is going to have a representative group of cocky/preppy types, but again, this is not a trait of the entire student body or even the entire Greek community. If that is something that really annoys you, you may want to look at other than Southern schools. I’m sure there are cocky/preppy students all over…possibly just a different type of cocky. The largest majority of students are Clemson are from Southern states, primarily South Carolina. (Out of state students make up approximately 30% of the general student population.)

If you’re really deciding between Ohio University and Clemson (which isn’t even close, Clemson is so much better) based on the type of people in greek life, you might want to reconsider your college criteria.
