Greek life

So, how big is ( or isn’t) Greek life at UConn? Anyone know?

There is a little bit of info on the UConn Tumblr . Here is the link:

I didn’t read through it all to see if it answers your question, but it may have some useful info

Thank you! That’s actually a great site for all kinds of info…

So glad you found it useful. Now if we just could find out if my son is admitted…
I know, I know…patience is a virtue!

Well, hopefully it will be soon! What major did he apply to?

Accounting

It is the last one we are waiting to hear on…and he has some great choices ( UMD being one of them…but may be a little too close to home for him!).

Haha ok well gee I guess u “know” me from the Maryland forum then…this forum is so much quieter, isn’t it? And wow, assuming falls church is Virginia (a favorite hiking spot btw) …the drive for you?.. And I’m complaining about 4 hours…lol But UConn really is beautiful. A totally different type of “big” school.

You are a wealth of info on that site…and yes, this is much, much quieter! I think most active are UMD and Penn State! UMD is only 35 minutes or so for us…think my son is afraid we will come visit!

We have been up to see UConn twice and it is beautiful and a great size. He has always been a huge Husky basketball fan but now I think his concerns stem from the campus not hosting many of the athletic games on campus (needing to go into Hartford for football, hockey, and some bball) and what we understand is the difficulty in getting basketball season tickets as Freshman and Sophomores. He is very sports oriented!

Walking around the other schools campuses that we have visited ( PSU, UMD and MSU) and having all the sports facilities right there is quite the draw for him! Fortunately, all have good business schools so he can’t make a bad decision!

As far as distance…all of these are closer than where our daughter is in school…Minnesota. Definitely not driving there ( and definitely not visiting in winter…no offense meant to Minnesotans!)

Hmmm I wasn’t aware of that issue about some sports off campus…I just knew they had to pay for attending games (!) which of course, as a Terp, I am quite spoiled that all students get to attend all games for free…
But, for my daughter, she could care less about the “other” sports and is only interested in basketball, so it shouldn’t be too big of a problem…and is that issue with tickets for basketball just for season tickets only for freshman and sophomores? Meaning can she go to a single game here and there? That may be a good question to post as a separate thread!

Yes, all those schools do have great business programs so it really does come down to “fit” for your son. As for distance, well, tell him the advantages of being able to come home whenever far outweigh inconveniences of not being able to come home when he does! And hmmm, three different sizes, all d1 schools. UConn is the baby, Maryland is the mama and Penn State is the papa… UConn and Penn State are in the middle of farmland (with cute but very limited local shopping) Maryland is on the border of the nation’s Capitol, so major city. Very interesting.

For my d, UConn is really the perfect “fit”…

UConn was the perfect fit …until he worried about the sports stuff! Hoping that when he does the admitted students visits the “perfect fit” will become apparent! Having had the Nation’s Capitol in his backyard growing up, doesn’t have the same attractiveness to him that it would to others.

Also admitted to Ohio State and Michigan State …We are doing lots of traveling in March!!

Best of Luck to your daughter…UConn is a great, great choice!

Well, that shouldn’t be a deterrent…might actually be of a more bonding experience for those that do attend games if u think about it…mini road trips haha. And national champs in basketball countless times…he’s worried about sports at UConn? We visited UConn right before they won the title and the excitement on campus was palpable…not to mention, how many schools have a mascot that cute? Not only do they have a costumed mascot, but an actual husky dog is on campus!

Are u going to do the husky for a day overnight? While we’ve been to campus, we still will because she really didn’t check out the lc options and I’m hoping that, like Maryland, admitted student programs give different info (more meat) about the school since you are past admissions. She doesn’t need to be “sold” on the school though…she loves it. I just want to learn how to navigate things. Very different.

We did the husky for a day program in November and it was great. Agree on the mini-road trips. He is also a huge soccer nut and UConn has a very active supporters group for their strong soccer team ( The Goal Patrol). So, for sure, not lacking in school spirit and great sports.

It is very easy to “find fault” ( assuming not being able to guarantee season tickets is a fault) with a school if you aren’t in it yet…know what I mean? Once he hears ( hopefully good news!), we will see what he is thinking!

Based on our past experiences, once you are in the school , you definitely get a different feel and different information for the return visit as an admitted student. Hence, all of our planned trips in March.

Hopefully we will hears something this week!

We visited the day of the celebration for the champs, in Hartford … the campus was empty, maybe most were on the buses to Hartford. Which makes me wonder if they a run a bus/shuttles to the games that are in Hartford. My D’s 2nd choice is Penn State. I am sure the cost for football tickets are similar, if not more…and also probably as difficult to get….In November I attempted to book a hotel near PSU for a home football game or 2…There was nothing left…UConn’s accepted student day is Sat the 11th of APril and there is a Husky for a day on Monday the 13th…we plan to do it then….that is if we get good news! @maryversity …Is it an overnight? I didn’t see that in the description….

@TLD1267- They do run buses to the off campus sports events. the info is here: http://subog.uconn.edu/
