Greek Rushing

Apart from the whole obvious aspects (such as going through rush week), what do I need to do at and/or before attending USC in order to prepare myself fully in order to receive a bid. I already think I know which fraternity I want to join, but am fully aware of the fact that I might change my mind after being physically present. Anyway, do I need letters of recommendations? This might be shallow... but I do not know too much about Greek Life, but do I need "preppy" clothes? Do I need to hit the gym all summer?

I guess what I am asking is, what actually goes on at Rush? Do people usually end up getting bids at the fraternity they want? And also, is there anyway to give me an advantage?

Thanks

Try not to “plan” on joining a specific fraternity. Chapters vary from school to school - a top house at X university is not necessarily a top house at USC.

No, you don’t need letters of recommendation. Social fraternities DO try to stress their focus on academics to the public, but don’t expect it to matter too much when it comes to actually getting a bid. No, you don’t need preppy clothes…but being wealthy DOES help. Some of the top/richer houses do background checks to make sure your family is wealthy.

Greek life in general is quite shallow and you will be judged on how you look. Obviously, they attract athletic guys, so improving yourself in that department is a good move. To be honest though, you should not be changing yourself to fit into a specific fraternity. Do what YOU want and see which house fits you.

Top houses are very competitive and you probably shouldn’t expect a bid unless you are a certain height, race, build, personality, social class, etc. Again, just be aware that greek life at USC, just as it is almost anywhere, is shallow and unpredictable.

GREAT ADVICE! I really appreciate it. I have basically chosen based off what the websites say and also what an alumni has told me. It is by no means a “top tier” house, but probably “middle-tier.” I will attempt to get bigger… I am of the average height and skinny stature. I am fine with the money portion, although it is really shallow. Academically I am fine (as are most others at USC).

I know what I can and cannot get into and Top Houses I basically can’t based off stature.

Thanks again!
